Aircraft 'rescue'

I don't alway know how I get into these projects but, here's another 'rescue'

I traded a Rossi engine for this many years ago and it's sat in my loft in this sorry state since. Well, feeling a little frustrated last night, I decided to kick this project into gear.

This is a Nosen 102" mustang, a nice flying aircraft, a true builders kit.

Whoever built this (I suspect it's seen a few hands since) built their way into a tidy corner.

Wings first;
- the wings are not joined yet one panel is sheeted.
- the joiner notches don't match the rib spacing
- the ribs weren't notched to match the joiner

I managed to free up key ribs with little damage and notch the ribs to match the joiners....

Next to align everything and apply a little glue.

Re: Aircraft 'rescue'

I've seen your building skills Jim so I just know that when you finish this project it will be one beautiful airplane! All the best with your project my friend.

I have a couple of projects in my shop just like yours, I mean having sat for years and in a sorry state. Maybe you can give me a kick in the pants so that I can get motivated to finish mine as well??

I hope you plan on posting more pics as you continue working on it Jim!!

Re: Aircraft 'rescue'

Thanks Gary!

This one is going to be a real chore, likely as much tear down as building....

As for the kick in the pants, there's nothing like frustration with people to kick me into high gear on a project such as this. Too bad you couldn't tear down and rebuild some people. :P

Re: Aircraft 'rescue'

Hi Jim:

That's gonna be a big model!

As Gary said, I'm sure it is come out perfect.

I've got one of these rescue jobs going myself. I've got a rebuild thread on our club website. Here's a link if you want to have a look.

Re: Aircraft 'rescue'

I do these all the time, I guess I feel sorry for the model just like Charlie Browns christmas tree.
Should be real nice Jim.

Re: Aircraft 'rescue'

Holy smokes Dennis, now that truly is a rescue plane. I actually find it enjoyable rebuilding a crashed plane, kinda like putting a big puzzle together!

And Jim, I owe you a thank you! After reading and replying to your first post, I went down in the basement, moved a pile of stored junk out of the way and made my way to my 1/4 scale Balsa USA Cub. I brought it up and out to the work shop, set it up on my work bench, dusted it off and started to organize the materials needed to work on and finish this build.

I've been thinking about it for quite some time but just needed something to set a fire under my butt to get working on it. Seeing you and Dennis getting enthused about rescuing your planes did the trick. I am determined to leave it on the bench this time until it's finished.

BTW, I started a build thread on this plane a couple of years back that I should also dig out of moth balls and continue on with. So thank you my friends for the spark!

Yes indeed. Kudos.

William; Charlie Brown tree ... funny yet true.

Gary, keep the spark alive, pass it on to others ... I'll be watching for your rebuild thread.

Re: Aircraft 'rescue'

Must be the winter weather driving some of us into our shops.
I must hold some kind of record for the number of half finished projects put away for another day(Too much time devoted to MAAC politics)
However four weeks ago I put a half done flying hull project back on the building board and now have it at the covering stage and even ordered a new OS 110 four stroke for it.
Next up is a 3/4 finished 1/3 scale Jungmeister which I hope to take to some contests next summer.
Then a half built Ziroli D18 Beech done up in RCAF colors.
If I get all this done by spring I will be doing well, but thats what retirement is for isnt it?
Jim is the P51 one of those Nosen designs meant at the time for a .60?
