What is GIANT SCALE

I would like to know what criteria defines GIANT SCALE?

Is there a certain percentage of the real size aircaft that makes it GIANT SCALE?

I assume that the plane must meet at least two criteria.

1. It must be GIANT sized.
2. It must be SCALE.

Can anyone come up with a definition for it?

Thanks

Re: What is GIANT SCALE

I've always thought Giant Scale was 25% or larger. That's MY guess based on what I've seen and read over the years!!

Re: What is GIANT SCALE

From IMAA (and MAAC points there):

What is Large or Giant Scale?

The concept of large or giant scale is generally considered to apply to radio controlled model aircraft with minimum wingspans of eighty (80) inches for monoplanes and sixty (60) inches for multi-wing aircraft. Ducted Fan and Turbine aircraft with one hundred forty (140) inches combined length and width, measured from wing tip to wing tip at the widest point perpendicular to the fuselage and added to the length of the fuselage, excluding any protrusions. Autogyros with 50 inches for a single rotor, 80 inches for a dual rotor. Quarter (1/4) scale replica's or larger with proper documentation (minimum 3 view drawing of an actual person carrying aircraft) which do not fit the size requirements will be permitted. However, the concept does not encompass radio controlled model aircraft so large as to have the potential of carrying a human being.

Yeah i think you are right with aircrafts of 30'-40'WS , 25% for them is right for being in giant scale category but what about aircraft with above 100' WS , now how many guys would build 1/6th scale Connie with 21'WS!, not very many just couple so far that i know off, so my model even at 1/14th scale with 109" WS is giant scale model. I will vote for IMAC's definition on this one..

A full size CriCri has a span of 16.1 ft. That would be 193.2 inches.

If I built one at 25%, that's 48.3 inches.
Cool! I got a giant scale CriCri at 48 inches wingspan.
