Any Spad'ers around Kitchener??

I'm interested in putting together a DPS or Debonair, a stryker type spad, as well as the DPS twin if the other two work out.

If someone that builds SPADs is around kitchener I would be interested in getting together and seeing how it is done I've located pretty much all the stuff now I just have to pull the pin. It would be cool to see before I pull out my wallet and start fiddling around.

Thanks,
B

Re: Any Spad'ers around Kitchener??

Hey B,

I'm not quite in the KW area, but I'm an hour west just outside of London. I've got a DPS that I've built and re-built half a dozen times. It is my workhorse airplane and is super-easy to build if you follow the instructions. I'd be happy to provide advice or guidance if you're ever in the London area or want to drop me an email.

The take-home message is that these things are super-easy to build! Just start into it and if you have any trouble, post your perils and we'll help you along.

FYI: I find that Gorilla Glue combined with punching holes along coro-to-coro joints will create an unbreakable bond. I've had bad luck with CA, but maybe that's just me.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Any Spad'ers around Kitchener??

Ben,

I totally endorse your comment about CA. I've built a Coroedge using CA & many of the joints are failing. I later built 2 other Coro wings & found that Goop was the best adhesive for the coro - coro joint at the TE of the wing. I used Elmers Ultimate (which I think is basically Gorilla Glue) on the spar/foam to coro joint & had no problem.

Re: Any Spad'ers around Kitchener??

Thanks for the replys,

I did just jump in.... did some experimenting and found the same. Woodpecker, torch, then gorilla glue.... Have not been able to break the bond without some major distortion to the plastic. I have just finished the Demon and will test fly it tomorrow. I think it is a bit heavy and my old Webra 40 will be in front so we will see

I also have a Double Demon half built. I liked the twin DPS shown on spadtothebone but liked the way the demon wing went together so with any luck that will fly next week with a pair of webra speed 35's. If all that goes without issue I will try my luck at a flying wing, either a CoroRoo of a Stryker type deal.

I liked how fast everything went together I was really surprised at the wing strength and think I went a bit heavy with a double spar configuration. I'll have to cut back with the next wing.

Wish me luck.

And Thanks Again

B

Re: Any Spad'ers around Kitchener??

Glad to hear you jumped into it!

For the record, I've seen planes midair and not bust CA coro-to-coro joints. However, I have had some bad luck and like PU glue (I've used both Elmer's Ultimate and Gorilla, and like them equally).

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Any Spad'ers around Kitchener??

Wahoo!!!! First flight with the Demon went well and I was TOTALLY impressed!

Second flight I thought a little flaps mixed in with the aileron would be cool EHHHHHHH NO it tucked on me right after takeoff and I didn't have enough up elevator to keep the nose up. Wound up landing hard and cracking the fuse... no worries though it is already swapped with a shiny new length of downspout and with any luck it will fly again tomorrow sans flaps. Quickest repair I have ever done!

Looking forward to building more

Re: Any Spad'ers around Kitchener??

WOOOHOOO!!

SPAD maidens are always a blast. You get the pride of a scratch-built airplane without the pucker factor of having 200 hours into it :P

Leave the fancy mixing for the fancy planes. This is a SPAD!!

Just kidding. Hope you're in the air again soon!

Lots of SPADs in the Woodstock area, and COMBAT CORO SPADs at Cobble Hills 1/2 way to London.

Re: Any Spad'ers around Kitchener??

Following depron plans as inspiration, I made a 36" Yak54 from Home Depot 4mm Coro. Little heavy but flies well. I have a 68" Extra 300 balsa/ply original plan and I'm gonna "convert" it to coroplast. I need 2mm coro for the main wing. Anyone knows a good store to buy 2mm coro ? I live in Acton!
Thanks,
Calone
