For best results these are finished machined inside and out from bar stock before being parted off and the compression clearances cut. This is done to support the compressible part of the collet and retain the close tolerance for the shaft. Once the slots are cut there is very little at the rear of the collet to support the leaves.

I thought about it... have to agree with Ed and Dennis. Cant see how it can be done accurately.

Good for the OP though, and the company sending him spares. Nice!

I was really curious how they actually made the thing though if it has nowhere to clamp onto.

By the way a jig is a pattern or guide for manufacturing be it single or multi piece. Fixtures hold work so it can be machined.

I have to agree with you. I was missing the boring bar flexing at the quadrants and the finish product being the shits.

However, I don't not understand your last comments concerning the differences between a jig and a fixture. You have no idea, what I was thinking about, so the only reason I can see for this statement was add a personnal touch. Dennis, I have noticed that most of your comments on this fourm start out with you showing your true knowledge of this hobby (and now you knowledge of machining) and ending with a rude or sarcastic comment. I would like to be enlighten on this matter because I don't understand. I am begining to think that being a tool maker for 30 years has turned you into the tool. I don't post here very much, but I do visit once a day and I can't let this ignorance go this time. Also, It makes me want to me you in person so I can learn some of your antics.

Thanks again
Jeff

Sorry to the rest of the people for not allowing a toolmaker to act as a tool.

If Dennis is the tool then this subject is the workpiece. This forum is the "Jig" that guides the tool to the workpiece. The computer is the "Fixture" that holds it all in place.

I don’t get what you are trying to insinuate here. First off I did not want you to hurt yourself trying to do something that might be unsafe then I tried to explain the correct terms to use in case you ever had reason to ask for the services of a tool shop or tool maker. No slight intended. If you wish to use the improper name for a tool or process please feel free to do so, after all it happens every day. If I were going to be a “tool” about it as you claim I might have written something like this in response to your last post:

Some are always interested in expanding their knowledge base through the use of proper terminology others are oblivious and happy to wallow in their ignorance. its obvious which path you have decided to take.

But being the true gentleman I am let’s just pretend I didn’t ok!!!!!!!
