I'm looking for ideas on hanging a 40 size trainer from the ceiling. (I'm out of wall space. LOL!)

I have found a few on the Internet, but thought I would reach out, see if anyone is has anything different.

Since I have exposed beams in the build room I opted for hooks drilled into the backs away from view from the common travel route.

With some aircraft I installed a ply hangar bracket directly into the structure and was able to drop a hook on string and easily slip it into the bracket. Other larger machines required a bit more work. Strong cotton string tied with loops on each end and one directly in the middle were sized to fit wooden dowels on each end. One loop was glued on so only one could come off and the dowel was lined with foam pipe insulation to prevent damage to the bottom of the fuselages.

Even that was not enough and the shelf brackets started making up for the rest. The longest arms available were topped with cut fuel tubing and lined again with the pipe insulation. Both help to form to any fuse shape I can fit.

NOTE: The plastic shelving helps sort parts and smaller models or pieces, such as helis, but you really have to be creative. The larger helis have rotor hooks from aluminum rod with smaller tubing over top to keep from scratching any rotor system bits.

that's a great setup cougar! i'm slowly building up to that level and then i'll need to be a little creative as well. hooks and string from the ceiling is probably the easiest and cheapest way to go

Wow... Gotta show my wife the picture of Cougar429's basement hangar the next time I "need" another airplane...

Some great ideas.. Especially like the foam pipe insulation (I assume) around the dowel or tube.. I see so many foamy models with notches at the wing root or on the fuselage where the model has been hung up with bare string.

Not from the ceiling, but I did make use of the cold room under the stairs for nose-up wall storage.

I have a set of those and the do work - BUT!

They have to be mounted EXACTLY for the one plane... as they are a custom fit they will not work for a different plane until you move the chock to fit the new wheel base.

Also - if you have wheel pants on the plane - the system will not work.

I would suggest that you, try out a set before you invest a lot in them...

I did not like nose up idea for my storage as most of my 4-strokes have case vents on the rear cover. Any residual oil would tend to drain away over time and make a mess, as well.

The system I built is modular - 1" holes 2" apart in 2x4 cleats with dowels to hold the airplanes.



I started hanging them nose down but I was worried about the clunk lines folding over and kinking, so nose up they went. What's interesting is that in every case a plane hung by the tail could be inverted and hung by the main gear with no other changes.



Well, the taildraggers at least... the Cessna 150 need a drop mount (still modular though) and a tail support.
