You never know - I'm sure the move back to GTA will not be the last move West!!! We've got offices in Calgary, Edmonton, Denver, Fort Mac and Burrard, so no shortage of opportunities in the future!!!

I've never lived out West, but I've heard it's the life!! For now I'll enjoy the swwweeett workshop that's coming soon in Burlington!!

Funny though - I was optimistic of restarting my builds in November, but the "honey-do" list is growing by the hour!!!! Time will tell!!

For now, the main focus is getting Jack's build off to paint tomorrow and finishing up some of the remaining details!

Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

After a few discussions with Dennis at Carden about design changes on the 43% Cardens, here's an important detail... gussets have been added to the front inside corner of the hatch (1/4" balsa) and the inside corner of the fuse (1/8" plywood).

Why?? There have been a number of people complaining of the front corners of their hatches cracking after a number of flights.

The theory: These 43% Cardens are the first design where the top mount of the cowl is bolted directly to former F2 (in all past designs, the cowl is hung from four L brackets off of the motorbox and don't touch former F2 - hence the typical 1/16" gap between the cowl and the fuse on past Cardens). In high G maneouvres, we think that the forces at the top of F2 (caused by the cowl weight) is causing the angle between F2 and the motorbox sides to change. Because the front hatch tabs are bolted to the fuse sides, when the angle between F2 and the motorbox changes, it puts major stresses on the hatch tabs which, over time, stresses the front of the hatch and causes cracks. It seems that the extra vibrations from the DA170 speeds up this process vs the smooth quads like the DA200.

The fix: Add in 1/8" plywood triangle gussets to F2 / motorbox sides to stabilize this angle. This modification will be one of the features included in the upcoming 124" Carden Extra300 that will soon be released!

So, the mod was added to this plane also!!

Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

The fuel tank saddles got installed tonight with 30 minute epoxy and the velcro was added also (vibration isolation and antislide for the fuel tank). The saddles are 1/16" plywood and I soaked them in an amonia solution so that I could bend them to shape!

The CF rods will be the hold-downs for the velco that wraps over the 2L pop bottle. It also ties the saddles together and further strengthens the motorbox!

Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

To modify the 2L pop bottle into a fuel tank, I simply buy the Sullivan metal fuel stopper system (SUL478 at Great Hobbies), cut a hole in the top of the cap of the bottle and tighten up the stopper.

I've used this method on my last 4 planes and have never had a leak or problem!!

Tomorrow, I'll plumb up the fuel tank and install the pop bottle

Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

I heard the painter started today and I can't wait to see the final result. Hopefully it will be done by the end of next week and free Trevor up sum after a few odds and ends!!!

From what I've seen Trevor do on this build thread, I can't imagine what the whole plane will look like when I see it with my own eyes.

Up to this point Trevor, you've given 100% on this build just like you did on the other builds in the past and know that you willl continue to do so on others in the future.

There's a lot of communication by phone and emails that that occurs during a build like this so you know exactly what your getting with Trevor.

Thanks Trevor.... thumbs up Buddy

Great news. I also can't wait to see the finished plane. Gonna look sweet!!

The communication with Trevor is absolutely stellar. Always has time to discuss ideas whether they're his or yours. He is alway innovative to improve techniques applied or improving on designs.

Congrats on your new BBT Jack. I know you'll be pleased as I am. Mine comes second to none!!

Way to go Trevor on another fine build. You're showing the world my friend.

Re: 126" Carden Extra 260 w/DA170 RE3

Thanks for the compliments guys - I'm blushing!!!!

No, seriously, I've come to the point where I enjoy building as much as flying (seems sad, but it's true) and I find it astounding how many ways there are to do each step of a build! I put everything I've got into a build and I like to make sure every detail is custom!!! (hence all our discussions - sorry!!)

About the paint job...
I really don't think words will describe just how cool this paint-job will be! Jack was trusting enough to give a few ideas to the airbrusher, but he has full creative licence to do what he wants! Based on my discussion with the airbrusher today on progress, it's going to knock peoples socks off!!!

Just working away on some odds and ends while the fuse is off at paint!

Here's a picture of the 2L pop bottle conversion to a gas tank using the Sullivan metal kit.
