Re: Top Flite Giant Scale P47 Thunderbolt

Got enough sheeting done on the bottom of the wing to start cutting out the ailerons and flaps, wing tip finished on one side, so managed to get 1/2 of the top glassed tonight.

Re: Top Flite Giant Scale P47 Thunderbolt

Good deal! Although I'm not 'quite that far in the build, I have a question for you in building the wing. When you were sheeting the wing did you have problems with the jigs that TF sent? Some different build threads I've read says from others that they have gap between the cradle jigs and the wing after sheeting. Now I might have overlooked some details in those builds, but I didn't think it would hurt to ask.

Re: Top Flite Giant Scale P47 Thunderbolt

Jigs seemed fine to me, least I didn't notice any issues.

Have a great time in Vegas guys! Give me a call when you get back to town, and I'll buy the coffee this time. PS I like the title and the name you came up with!

Re: Top Flite Giant Scale P47 Thunderbolt

After several days of tinker work this week, I've done a whole mess of filling on the fuse. (poor jug looks like a starved horse!) Anyway, cleaned off the table, and now I'm in the process of starting the wing. I'll be working on that while I wait for more goodies to buy, and wait for in the mail! Will post some pics as the build continues.

Re: Top Flite Giant Scale P47 Thunderbolt

I'll try to get some pics posted soon as well. For avoiding the "starved horse"look, sheet in small sections, as they'd have done on the real deal. I'm working on a 1/6th Mossie at the moment, and sheeting from rib to rib, in 4"and 3"widths. Takes a bit of time, but results in minimal sanding and filling afterwards!

Re: Top Flite Giant Scale P47 Thunderbolt

All of the Top Flite kits seem to think you can easily sheet the entire length of a compound curve fuse, with one piece. I think I've posted pics of the P-47, sheeted one section at a time, from the centre of one rib, to the centre of the next. Probably not something I'd do, if it were to be a monokote fuse, but for glassed fuses, the composite structure of the wood and glass is more than strong enough. Some areas of the Mossie, sure I've used longer sections, i.e. the area along the wing/ bomb bay, and some areas along the side. Top and bottom, small short sections at a time, ensuring each panel is properly shaped. Windex to soften things up, helps as well. If you look at the photos of the Me-262 I'm building, 1/8th balsa is curved into amazing tight curves. I'll have some shots up in the next day or so of the mossie, which will explain better than I can what I do. It's worked for me for a few decades, anyways.
