Stuff like that never gets outdated, or obsolete. Every modeler's library IMO should have some of his stuff.

I know its not as in depth but for 90 % it will be more than adequate and its sure a lot cheaper then what is being asked for Andy’s original book which unfortunately is no longer in print..

Martin Simons "Model Aircraft Aerodynamics" a good accompaniment to Andy Lennon's book

Re: The mathematics of flight

I've always wondered why designers have never incorporated turbine intakes into the upper wing surface itself to aid with laminar flow?

I stumbled across a copy of the latter book on table of discontinued/end of run books (WalMart, I think) for $8.00. (The sticker on the back says $31.00.) Most of the math is WA-A-A-AY over my head (never finished high school!) but I still find it is informative, and enlightening.

Yep typical yahoo right close to other boats, no life jacket no wonder you can't seem to find those any more. Had one guy on the lake where I spent vacation time roll it over and dove into the water He got rid of it.

Re: The mathematics of flight

actually, the UFO looking thing you posted a picture of, is not being developed by the French, but a team in England. I have the plans and schematics of it if you are interested. I have the foam and all pieces required to build my own. just finding the time to get around to doing it. looks like it's fun to fly though.

The link to the french website is right above the photo.
Do you have a link to the British site? and I'd love to see the plans.

I hear you on that time thing, things are busy at the field.

Re: The mathematics of flight

the link with the plans is the same one you have. if click your own link and scroll down the page, you'll see the plans listed right there. that's the same link that I have. I can't find the other one for some reason but I'll keep looking. I got to it after I watched it on Daily Planet on the Discovery channel. I seem to remember the design team being up in Bedford, or somewhere up that way. I'll keep looking though.

here's the actual link direct to the plan.

Re: The mathematics of flight

In answer to my original statement, The wing moves air down. It also drags a lot of air with it.

"Kip's Formula"
Use the wing length as "one". The fuselage can be 2/3 rds or 3/4 qtrs the length of the wing. the length of the fuselage is measured from the back of the prop to the elevator hinge line. The horizontal stab and elevator area should be between 15% to 25% of the wing area. The fin and rudder area includes the aft fuselage area that is next to it, that is 6% to 10% of the wing area. On high performance A/C the wing is quite often close to the same length as the wing. The thickest part of the wing should be between 25% and 35% of the wing cord. The C of G should be at the thickest part of the wing. The thickest part of the wing should be at 25% to 35% from front of the fuselage. The cord line is an imaginary line from the center of the leading edge to the center of the trailing edge. On all aircraft including trainers it is a good idea to have both wing and stab cord lines at zero. If you are going to build a canard style A/C then the load on the stab (ounces pre square inch) that it has to carry must be quite a bit more than the wing, in order to get the effect that the stab always stalls first. To accomplish this move the C of G forward.
