I have a Binford 150 and it still does those "snapperoo's". Now that Brendan has cleaned his cans he should have a rocket.

No worries. I'm definitely not shy. I've been looking forward to a chance to go since the first worlds when I was just starting in basic. Now I just need to figure out how to get enough practice time in put in a good showing.

I still cant get over the power increase by cleaning the cans. It is a lot of work but the result is actually scary. I went from an up line that would fade out at a hundred feet or so to an unlimited up line. Lee tried it yesterday and his response was Holy @#%@!! I am just finishing off one of his and he should also have a rocket on his hands later this morning.

I would definitely recommend cleaning canisters or pipes once a year. The carbon gradually builds up and chokes them. The process does stain them a bit but they are hidden anyway.

I have no doubt. I did a set of canisters last year with a Zep product from Home Depot - Industrial Purple degreaser. It warns against using on aluminum because it changes the colour but as you say, who sees them anyway, not like they are a hood ornament.

Bit of a messy job, need a way to fill the can's with the solution and plug them so they can sit in a warm water bath (5 gallon pail). Leave to soak for a while then rinse and repeat. Lots of black gunk comes out. And this is an outside job, not in the kitchen !

Cannot swear Industrial Purple is the best stuff and it does turn the cans a light grey colour. I remember reading the threads on FG about a Dawn heavy duty degreaser that they could buy the in the US, but seems to me it was corrosive and they took it off the market. I looked all over Niagara Falls NY one day trying to find it with no success. Might try Oxyclean the next time.

Need to wear goggles / protective glasses and gloves if you are doing this !!

Brendan, I take it from the selection period running right until the end of the 2017 season that you have to qualify for the highest class flown during that period. In otherwords, if I move up to Advanced in the 2017 season I take it that I would have to qualify as an Advanced pilot?

Your observation is correct. To the best of my knowledge, the class you fly next year is the one you would compete in. You can move up in 2018 and yet fly the previous class at the worlds. Do you remember Cal who competed in Sportsman but was actually flying Advanced that year. He had jumped over intermediate altogether.

Thanks Brendan, I'm definitely thinking about it. It's time for me to move up to Advanced though so I guess I'll really need to practice over the winter in order to hit the ground running next year!

Yes, I agree with Brendan. It would be the class you fly in 2017 that counts in terms of qualifying. If you move up prior to the World's in 2018 then we could do as the US did and not consider that. We might need to verify that is the process for our colleagues to the south.

Kal is now flying Unlimited and doing very well. Nice to be young, skilled and fearless with a tremendously supportive family. Santiago who won Sportsman in 2014 is now also flying Unlimited and doing well. Also a really nice guy. I have had the privilege of getting to know them by judging at the US Nats. Great young guys.
