Top Flite DC3 Conversion to Electric

My TF DC3 has been sitting in a state of near completion for a while now.

I just never had the urge to finish the installation of the engines. I just got bogged down with the work needed to get them fitted.

With my success of electric flight over the last 2 years, I decided to make this one electric as well.

First a look at the present state:
Here is the engine mount installed on the wing;

This is the motor I want to use in here. Donkeys!

Hmm.. how to space the motor so that the prop ends up in the right place ahead of the cowls?

The manual clearly states the position of the props from the firewall.
the specs call for 4-3/16 inches or 106.36mm
I measured the Donkey motor mount to prop to be 68mm
That means my motor spacer needs to be 38.3mm long

OK ready to go. I removed the motor mount and the cowl ring.
Plumbing, fuel tanks- these all have to go too.

Re: Top Flite DC3 Conversion to Electric

Glad to see this thread. I've got one on the go, and have serious reservations about the ability of a 2 stroke to suck fuel that far.

Ya.

My goal is to at least get mine done before you finish yours. Trying to stay ahead of you will egg me on to getting mine done sooner..not later

Hey Max, keep the photos and comments coming, I'm following along for future reference. The kit is enroute. You too Dave.

Will do. Just doing a pile of sanding now on the wing, getting ready for sheeting. I'll get some pics probably tonight, with the robart retracts in place.

Re: Top Flite DC3 Conversion to Electric

Hi Max I just did the same too, I'm waiting for the motors now from HK. I'll put in 2 Turnigy G46 in it. It will be more thant enough power.
As you can see, I built scoops on top of the nacelle to accomodate the Esc's

Re: Top Flite DC3 Conversion to Electric

Max look on the HK site for the motor mount spacers

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...s_Spacers.html

Use two 20mm spacers to get you to 40mm. Having the props at exactly 38.xxxx mm is not that important, you can always move the cowls a few mm forward.
