McDaniel onboard glow driver
My new BF 109 [125 Saito ] has an onboard McDaniel glow driver that does not work properly if the planes receiver uses a 6.0 volt [5 cell NiMh], If I subsitite a 4 cell 4.8 v battery , everything works normally.
With the 6.0 v battery installed the indicator light for the glow unit flashes intermittently from idle to full throttle. Aileron , rudder & elevator inputs on the transmitter will also activate the driver. The unit is set to only come on when 1/4 throttle or lower. The extra voltage is obviously causing the problem, I am going to contact McDaniel & ask about the extra voltage problem, I see nothing in the instructions restricting the unit to 4.8 v. Does anyone have similar problems or any thought on the subject ?

The only differences in specs are the battery capacity. ALL are listed as 4.8V with specific restrictions against LiPos, even with a regulator. I would think you are lucky you did not toast any of the IC's running them at 6V. One other note is that these systems run their polarity in reverse to any other standard battery powered glow driver, with the case positive and glow tip negative. You absolutely have to isolate any electrical connection to the rest of the radio power system, even to the point you do not run a direct metal throttle linkage that electrically connects to the engine, (think older Saitos with the metal throttle arm). The best method would be to keep your flight system battery as is and run a separate 4.8V pack just for the McD. Along with operating properly you prevent the glow driver load from pulling down the flight pack. Hope that helps. I never scanned the instructions so don't have them to send with the highlighted section on battery voltage. There is this directly from the Sonic Tronics site: http://www.sonictronics.com/xcart/home.php?cat=285

Re: McDaniel onboard glow driver
Thanks, I guess what fooled me is that the page on the McD site states "all drivers will work with a 4.8 or 6.0 volt Receiver " I assumed if someone is using a 6.0 v compatible receiver that they were using 6.0 volts, not necessarily so !!
To make things easier I may just drop down to a 4.8 pack, I already have two batteries on board [retracts & receiver] or may tap into the retract battery as it is 4.8 volts ??? The more I think of it, that is the way to go as no weight will be added . Thanks again for the thoughts & advice.
