Time to start toying with the Offset feature that Chris has been working with. (Nice work bud!)

I plan on using monokote a bunch, and I know the No.11 blades take a beating when I'm covering.
Has anyone had an issue with blades dulling yet? what are the symptoms? (just hard to weed?........)

Anyone have any idea how long a blade will last when cutting monokote yet?



I did check out the link Mike mentioned and there are some good files and ideas there for sure! (quite a few actually!)

So using a method I picked up here on RCC, I 'windexed' the Monokote down to a vinyl sheet to act was the carrier.

I will maybe try to clean up the video and add decent voice-overs in time (not happy with the my audio part yet), but I hope you enjoy it and maybe get something out of it!

Well Scott, it looks like you are going to be the Guinea pig to find out how long the blade will last using it with Monocote. I haven't come across anyone mentioning blade dulling and RC coverings yet.
I am assuming a dull blade will cause the material to be pulled up as it cuts.

I will have to warn you though. Once you start to play with the offset feature and creating depth to your graphics. You will start to look at your earlier creations and some of them will look so plain. I have removed some of mine because I can make them even better. It is a never ending cycle.

To add to Scott's video tutorial of cutting longer groups of words than what the cutting mat allows.
I worked out a solution that allow me to to still use the mat.

If you remember my post #99 of my Windex glider. The wing sports the name of the glider. I wanted to fill the wing with the name and I ended up with a length of 21 1/2 inches with 2 1/2 inch high letters.
Too big to cut on the mat in one piece, either in width or length.
I ended up breaking the name into two and using reference marks.
Trying the different symbols I discovered the : was the same spacing as the space bar. So I used the colon as a reference mark to reassemble my graphic back together after cutting.

It looked like this on the screen. I chose my font and scaled it like this.
:WINDEX::1200 C:

I broke the group at the two colons and cut it as Pic 1 shows.
:WINDEX:
:1200 C:

(Note: I have thrown the original cuttings away so I have re-cut the graphic using covering backing paper to demonstrate.)

Pic 2 shows the graphic has been separated and the colons between the X and 1 lined up. (Just cut it in half using scissors.)

(Note I had to removing a little of the backing behind one colon so I could line up the two colons.)

Using a long ruler, I lined up the bottom of the colons to ensure the graphic was straight and true. Make sure you weed out the colons as they are not needed! The letters were removed with painters tape as describe earlier.

I have experimented a little with the [ ] to replace the colon as a reference mark. It is a little easier to line up with the straight edge but some fonts screw them up. Best to test first before committing to the cut.

That's a good tip, Chris! It's a great way to keep things lined up. When required, I have always just carried over the last letter , setting it up to cut like this:

rol airlpane

Then you can break up the text anywhere.

Do you guys use your "offset" feature to create outlines and shadow or "3D" type effects? I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with.

Hey Colin. I haven't had to break actual words yet and was thinking how to keep them straight when reassembling. (I have been looking in the software for a reference marks option but haven't found anything yet.) There will come a time when I will have to split a word up. You never know when you need to cut a word like. " Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"

Not sure if I am creating actual 3D but the layering is giving a much better visual effect to the graphics and words.
