Hey guys...dabling with the idea of starting a small AP business and am wondering if I should be looking at some insurance. Can anyone give me some info as to what types are available and costing?

Thank you.

I think aerial photography insurance fits fine under the heading of General RC Aircraft Discussion... Might be a little better under the AP heading, but I wouldn't know, I'm not the forum police.

You'll need alot more than just insurance.

It would be real easy if it were a real manned/womand aircraft.

But if it's a model of any weight at all, it comes under the auspicies of the DoT, because it's operating as a business and you're taking money. You'll get hit with all the UAV regs even if it's a 40 size trainer!

Someone once told me that their motto should be: we're not happy, until your not happy.

Re: Insurance

Thanks guys...I figured it wouldn't hurt to post here especially as in OFF TOPIC the guys are chatting about the price of gas and such. I've been told that as it is an electric plane that I might avoid most of the regs. I'm willing to chance getting caught on that matter but would be more comfortable if I had some liability coverage in case of an accident. Is that available in Canada?

Electric power, gas, or rubber band, makes no difference.

Simply, , , , your using your model to make money, ie: selling the pictures.

If you have an incident and the insuance company ask's for a copy of your DoT special operations permit, and you don't have one, , , you'll most likely get dropped immediately. And I very much doubt if they would refund your premium.

Re: Insurance

Mark,
I know there are people doing this already - perhaps it would be more beneficial to ask those who are currently working with remotely piloted camera platforms instead of asking a bunch of general RC guys here...?

I was down in Chatham this fall and was told the owner of the hobby shop there does aerial photog. with his heli.

Also, I was sure there was someone in the Kitchener area also, maybe ask at Flite craft?

Thats where I'd start... I also remember a few years ago, in one of the magazines, a whole article on getting set up to do this as a business.. but I can't remember which mag right now.

Good point.

Go to 4900 Yonge Street, Government of Canada Bldg.
(Yonge & Sheppard area)
4th floor, ask for Mr Laird Gillespie (416)952-0217
(or his boss, Mr Rick Schobesberger, Regional Mgr, (416) 952-0193)

They will tell you absolutely everything you need to know.

This general r/c guy is just upstairs from them.
Get Laird to buzz me at my ext 6076 and we'll go for lunch.

Re: Insurance

I thought I read somewhere that MAAC was having discussions with the regulators in regards to special permits.

If I actually was interested in doing this, and cared about the legalities of it all, I'd be contacting MAAC. They must have someone they deal with at DoT or whatever department this falls under. MAAC may not have specifically disussed AP, but the people they deal with would surely have some idea about what your wanting, and could perhaps get you in contact with the people that can actually help you out.

I'm not saying MAAC has the answers, but they could likely point you in the right direction.

This is an option only if Laird and Rick are unable to help you out
