We do seem to have the talent to improve stuff, the Sabre F-86 Mk 6 was the best of the lot, powered by an Orenda turbine, it was the fastest version and most maneuverable I think. Canadair also souped up the Starfighter and the Freedom Fighter I believe.

As a ha ha, I proposed to my bud that we build a 1/5th scale foam Arrow, it would be 187" long. I would use 120mm EDF units, RC Lander has 120 units ready to go that can generate 8000 watts each. It think foam and turbines might be a melting hazard so the EDF way would be the most practical way to go.
Yes the polyester cures with the lack of air/oxygen so the very thin film of special wax causes it to cure much quicker and properly. If re-laminating say another layer of cloth or carbon fibre the best way is to use non waxed polyester resin, more cloth and then the final layer of resin being waxed resin..
If vacuum bagging then that works the same as the layer of waxed resin. Think that is the way they do glass boats then it allows better working time with no worry of delamination later on.

Still like the sound of kerosene turbines running as you can't get any better than that for thrust and sound affects ! That's what glass fibre or wood fuselages are all about I guess.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Once the holiday season is done, I'll be getting at the two big projects, one is the Arrow. I'll be posting pictures of the mould making and the prototype parts being made.

One of the problems is I work in the garage, which is off the kitchen. When I do fiberglass work in the garage, it stinks up the house. Wifie is not happy about that. So, I must do the work outside in the driveway and let things cure mostly before bringing it inside. So, the weather temperature plays a big part, but it's getting warmer now so I hope to make the canopy, turtle deck and forward fuselage moulds first.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and have a good New Year's.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

It's been a long time coming but conditions are perfect, the temperature is in the high 80's here, so the evenings are finally mild. Tonight, I started the mould making process. First to be done, the cockpit, turtle deck, tail cone stinger and the forward portion of the fuselage. I got the parting boards formed to the forward fuselage and sealed. The other items have been mounted on their parting board as well.
Tomorrow morning, waxing, PVA and the first coat of gelcoat, then in the afternoon, the second coat.

Here are the other items. The iPad will only let you post one picture at a time for some silly reason.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Absolutely a beautiful day, so waxed and applied the PVA to the parts. Here is what things look like after the first coat of gelcoat.

Thanks

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Originally, yes, but now, not too sure. Most definitely not going to make kits and wait for them to sell, bin there, done that, and got burned. It'll be cash up front to cover the costs and the rest before shipping.

Due to the limited market for a big Arrow, I was going to do the wings as foam cores but my bud almost has me convinced to do them composite.
