Top-Flite LustreKote Colours.

I just wasted $14 and about 3 hours of my time.

It's partially my fault, but I'm not going to take ALL the blame;

A friend was going to the hobby shop and asked me if I needed anything.
I asked him to pick me up a can of Dark Red paint, to match the Dark Red Monokote.
I looked up the colour on the internet, and Top-Flite showed Dark Red part #TOP7218.
As there was only ONE Dark Red listed, I felt I was safe to ask for Dark Red without the part #.
I got the paint, and verified that it was Lustre-Kote colour-match Dark Red.
That night I painted my cowl, but as I was painting, I realized that the colour was way off!! when I checked the part # on the can, it was #TOP7517.
This number is not even listed in Top-Flite's colour chart. It is labelled Dark Red, the same as the TOP7218.
I wonder if the paint I got is an old discontiued #, or if it's a new # that has not been listed yet. In my opinion, it's a stupid idea to have 2 different shades of red with the same name. And if it's supposed to be a colour-match for Mono-Kote, there is only 1 Dark Red MonoKote, so what the heck is this other stuff supposed to match??

Anyways, if you're painting with this stuff, be sure to check the part numbers!

Paint to match covering!

Ron, you know the story with with the cowel on my Sig Cap. Both the Paint and the covering had exactly the same name Ultracote " Deep Yellow" and colour code numbers were exactly the same. As you seen, the paint was indeed yellow but thats all that can be said for it. It turned out to be a lighter and almost a muddy colour yellow a few shades off to say the least.

The absolutely best matches I have found for paint is an auto supply place in Paris Ontario that uses a computer colour matching program that has worked out for me to be the best I have found. They will colour match a sample and put it into spray cans for you. Its not cheep at around $16 per can but its a heck of a lot easier and cheeper than buying a colour that is so far off that you have to resand the cowel and start all over and hope for the best again.

There are a few places around that will do this for you and in my humble opinion it the best way to go.

I would have spent more time and money matching this paint, but I expect this cowl to just be temporary. I thought the colour would be close enough just to get by for the rest of the season, but it is totally the wrong colour.

Compared to mine, yours is a close match!

Eventually I will order a FG cowl for this plane, and then I will take more care to match it.
