Talking Mig-17C Upgrades to Composite

Hi Guys,
After applying fiberglass resin to the wings on my next Mig-17 that I was intending to have finished for this season, the next day I found the resin did not cure in several locations. Looking at this mess, I decided to take a second shot at making composite wings for the model since I made the moulds about 8 or 9 years ago. At that time the additional weight of the compoiste wing wasn't good being nearly twice as heavy as the foam core method. But because the model has returned to a 70 mm EDF setup which is a lot lighter than the HW-609, I figured, why not.
They actually turned out pretty darn good, total weight out of the mould is 3.5 oz for each wing. I also like the fact that I can make these wings faster than making the foam core parts. These wings reduce the total parts count by about 24.
The large fiberglass item next to the fuselage is the 37mm cannon fairing. I still have to make the fairings for the twin 23 mm cannons on the other side and perhaps I'll do the stab as a fiberglass item as well. It's solid balsa and very light, so maybe not, I'll have to see.
Any comments and suggestions are welcomed.
I won't be raising the cost of the kits either......which reminds me, gotta renew my domain account.
Attached are a few pic's of the experiment.

Nice Mig John, as a suggestion ( you ask) maybe some former for simple electric retract will be nice. As usual your skill amaze me.
BtW: Happy new year to you and our family.
Cheers.

Re: Mig-17C Upgrades to Composite

Those wings look terrific, John, and 3.5 oz. is amazing- that's gotta be lighter than a sheeted and 'glassed foam core wing, surely? I was just halfway into the shop to weigh the Banshee's wings when I remembered they're now (as of last weekend) bonded to the fuse

Re: Mig-17C Upgrades to Composite

Wow, this post started in 2011, talk about dragging ones feet getting the model built. Anyway, the composite wings shown on the first post were found to be too flexible. So they were redesigned and have 1/16" balsa sheeting laminated to the skin. Very much the same as my Avro Arrow's wings.

They are attached and quite light. I'm finally in the process of finishing the model. Adding a few small scale details as I go along. Looked at installing retracts, but the wing is too thin and I woukd need to cut the intake ducting out to get the nose gear installed. So, it's going to stay as a bungee launch or using a dolly, now that the flying site has a runway. But, it'll be a belly lander just the same.

I have a litany of different EDF's I can use, Air Power AP-700, an old Habu E-Flite 70 mm, Change Sun 70 mm, XPR 70 mm, even the RC Lander 64 mm can be made to fit. Decisions decisions....

Re: Mig-17C Upgrades to Composite

Habu 70mm an option? Surely the CS 70mm in 10 or 12 blade version is much better suited (as the eflite fan sounds horrible). You know that the standard habu motor will work nicely with the CS 10 blade rotor on 4S. I have done this marriage of parts for a couple habu's and the sound is so much better (like night and day).

Re: Mig-17C Upgrades to Composite

Never thought of that Eric, you are quite right though, the sound isn't the best at all. Since I have a few dozen CS EDF units, the version two with the higher blade count, I will do as you suggest.

Thanks for the idea. 😊

Say, do you want a Habu EDF unit, it's free 😊

Re: Mig-17C Upgrades to Composite

Thanks John but I already have a few spare fans that don't have a place to be installed.
The Mig looks nice and I'm sure it will fly well. It does deserve a good sounding fan.

Re: Mig-17C Upgrades to Composite

Not much done on the old Mig today, the ailerons are solid balsa, so two coats of polyester resin and a good sanding made the surface very smooth. They are ready for mounting.

I rechecked the smallest electric retracts o see if they would fit, guess what, there is just enough clearance. But, the wing structure was not intended to have them so figure I will just forgo the effort, save weight and frustration. The nose gear would be an issue with the intake ducting already installed. It would need to be cut out. The only upside, there would be a lot more space inside the fuselage, the downside, the air flow to the EDF would be turbulent.
