Finally got around to making some pilots for my 1/4 scale Cubs. I shopped around but the dollar strores don't carry the right sizes and quality pilot figures cost big bucks, even the unpainted ones. These two guys are made from pink foam with a skin of Model Magic putty around the face and head. Finished with acrylic paint and the tops of my kids socks for sweaters. Each weighs under an ounce. That's Hans on the left and Franz in the shades (brothers...not partners!).

Are you taking orders?? I'm going to need a few in a bit. 1/9th scale civilian pilots and about 6 passengers ! Full body if you can pull it off!

Those look very good. I like the fact they each have a very unique face!

How long did it take to make them?

Any special tools or techniques you used?

They look every bit as good a commercial product, and they are unique.

Wow, they do look good.

I always have a hard time dishing out so much money just to have a pilot in the plane. You know how it is... spend months and months building, crafting and toiling over a new model, bring it out to the field proud as punch and the first thing you'll hear, "where's the pilot"?

My Cub needs one too! Well done Bent!

Good job! I'm not one for "playing with dolls" but I have to admit they will look good in that cub.

Dave
I spent a little over an hour on each one. I'll make another next week and put together a photo essay. As for special tools, the best way to acheive a decent face is with a mold. I used a broken, vacuum formed arf pilot. The putty is pushed evenly into the mold half, carefully removed and then placed on the head of the pink foam core. A little windex prevents sticking to the mold. These guys are 1/8 size and fly WWI combat.

I'm looking forward to that. I can use the help myself, maybe for my J3.
