NiMH Tx and Rx Batt Life

Is it just me or is anyone else thinking that the NiMH packs for airborne and Tx don't hold up the way NiCd packs do. I renewed my Tx pack and have a couple of Rx packs that after a couple of years don't stack up. NiCd, on the other hand seem to last just about forever.

I'm ordering up some NiCds for the spring. Tex.

NICD'S have been too good to me to even bother changing in the first place

I've been using the same two NiMH packs in my Slow Stick for two years. They've had a lot of flights on them and they're still going strong. Have you been taking proper care of your packs?

I will be starting my fifth year with my 1600mah nimhs. I know I am not getting 1600mah out of them but I can still fly more than I want to on a single charge. Since the time I purchased them the mah has increased and I will be willing to purchase new cells when the time comes. Time will tell how they hold up. The greatest drawback to Nimh is their rather large self discharge rate. When off the charger you can lose up to 15% of your charge in the first 24 hrs. It tapers off after this to a slower discharge. I usually peak my TX and RX nimhs just before or on the way to the field.

Keeping batteries cool goes a long way to prolonging their service life. In other words, don't leave them in a hot car at the field. Also, make sure they don't get too warm while charging. I had one pack that does so I pressed an old Pentium 2 heatsink into service. Works really well, especially with flat packs.
