Electric Glow Fuel Pump.
I'm wondering which electric glow fuel pump people are using in their flight box? I've used half a dozen in the last ten years. From expensive to cheap. The Sig Gas Passer Electric Fuel Pump being pricey and a Sullivan Streamer as a cheap one. The Sullivan lasted two weeks and then was leaking and the Sig lasted two years and then seized up. I'm using a Turnigy one now that's getting slower and slower. I've tried the Hangar 9 one also. Unless someone knows of a good one I'll be going back to a hand pump. Which means I won't be needing my power panel any more. I only use it for my fuel pump now. Cheers Floyd

Floyd
I bought the rechargeable hand held unit from ICARE at the Toledo show, I've yet to put it to work but it sure is compact. http://www.icare-icarus.com/Field-Ac...ump_c_250.html

Re: Electric Glow Fuel Pump.
The old SonicTronics used to be good. I stopped using them 20 years ago and have been using a hand crank pump ever since. Lipo powered starter.

Re: Electric Glow Fuel Pump.
I have been using the same old electric pumps, (Royal, Hangar 9 and Glow Hobby have similar units, with Turnigy now selling one similar). Had to mod them with a new coupler as the usual plastic bits inside get brittle or spin on the motor or pump shafts. Only other problem is the O-ring on the pump shaft can dry out and leak.
I believe when I started over 3 decades ago I used a windshield washer pump, although not sure how long that lasted. Keep a hand crank pump in the tub just in case of failure or dead battery. Never know.

Re: Electric Glow Fuel Pump.
Try a windshield washer pump from Canadian Tire.

Re: Electric Glow Fuel Pump.
Does the universal windshield pump run in reverse? I looked on the internet but can't find the answer. I do keep a hand crank in my flight box at all times after being let down more than once by an electric pump. Cheers Floyd

Re: Electric Glow Fuel Pump.
Windshield washer pumps work great with water but not so sure of high alcohol glow fuel also only a one way pump and won't defuel if the impellor type.
You might check out if Jersey modeller makes a pump for glow fuel as they do for gasoline, kerosene, diesel and jet A fuel. Will last a lifetime so if you are replacing your low priced pumps over and over as often as you say you could have probably bought two by now. Same ole same ole! Issue in the rc hobby industry , buy quality and is usually lasts ; buy cheap And it can get expensive. I see that their pumps have changed. Used to be a white pump attached to a dc motor with cooling fines on it . Looks like it is no longer being produced by original manufacturers. They were bulletproof . Guess the price kept climbing may have cause the demise. Last edited by stegl; 06-24-2017 at 10:36 AM. |

Re: Electric Glow Fuel Pump.
The Sig Gas Passer Electric Fuel Pump was the most I've ever spent on a pump. But it was quite a disappointment to only get a couple of seasons out of it for the price I paid. Cheers Floyd

Re: Electric Glow Fuel Pump.
My favourite has always been a Trico windshield washer pump, usually scrounged from an auto wrecker out of a junked car for free.
Those pumps were also available from Crappy Tire. And yes, they do run in reverse. Not only that. they actually pump fuel in reverse. Still have an functional one on my field box after many years service. The operation is very simple. There is a wheel with one or more balls attached to the circumference. The motor rotates the wheel with the balls which press against a tube - usually neoprene. This pushes the fuel through it. So it doesn't matter which direction you turn. This is exactly how your manually operated pumps, such as Dave Brown, Du-Bro, Hobbico et cetera, work except that you are using muscle power instead of an electric motor to do the rotating. |
