flap question - my new Phoenix jet

Just getting around finally to setting up the Phoenix. I was slightly delayed by getting ready and participating in the IMAC Nats last week.

So, I have everything dialed in... as per the book. However, the manual states 70mm down flap for full flap setting. I can get a LOT more (basically 80 degrees down). Should I leave them at the 70mm down, or go for whatever I can get?

Re: flap question - my new Phoenix jet

Andrew, 80mm is OK, might need 1 more mm of up elevator though.

Re: flap question - my new Phoenix jet

Hi Peter

In some cases exsessive flap deflection can cause a disturbance of air flow to the elevator
ie SM Hawk with full flap the elevator autority is almost zero hence the air flow deflectors
installed just forward of the stab to stablize the flow of air

Good Luck

Ted

Re: flap question - my new Phoenix jet

Ted, in the Phoenix the elvator is about 8 or 10 inches higher than the wing. I was under the assumption that flaps are most effective when they are down near 90 degrees.

However I guess I can start at 70mm down and lower then a little if I find the plane doesnt want to slow down enough?

Hey Jim Brown, what setting are you using??

Re: flap question - my new Phoenix jet

Hey Andrew,

Just sent you a reply to your PM on this. But I think I got my measurements wrong. Ignore the 120mm bit. As I mentioned, I've got mine set to somewhere between 60 and 70 degrees. Keep a bit of power on until very short final.

Good luck!

Re: flap question - my new Phoenix jet

OK, gotcha! 70mm as per the manual it is...

Test flight pending Monday or Tuesday of next week, I am off to another IMAC contest this weekend.

I just bought some fresh kero today.. Now I just have to wait a few more days.
