Platt FW 190 retract search

I really wished I had done more research before starting the Platt FW 190 79.25 span build. This build from plans is not for the faint of heart ! However , it is going well [sort of ] except for trying to find retracts for it. It appears the gear shown on the plans "Dave Platt special " are not available. I contacted Platt & he said one word, "Siera". I contacted them & their gear does not fit the rail spacing shown on the plan. Also VERY pricey.
[ I have already made the wing with spacing as per plan, again, not enough research ! ]
I am ready to try anything including ripping out the current mounting rails.
Robart, Arfpro {ESM] Shindin wont answer my emails & CJ does not carry them.
Any recommendations ??
,

Re: Platt FW 190 retract search

Hi Richard. What are the dimensions you need? I can compare them to the ESM/ units I have and at least you'll have a starting point.

Re: Platt FW 190 retract search

Thank you ! that would be so helpful I was just looking thru VQ warbirds / EMS site, they supply two EMS versions for the FW 190 but they give no dimensions or airplane size.
My plan shows 12 " to 12 .5 " from pivot to axle with a 1 1/4 spacing between the mounting rails. I estimate a final weight of 20 lbs.
I suspect I will be modifying the rails for any gear I find, should have got the gear first !
Thanks again.
Rick

Re: Platt FW 190 retract search

My ESM 89"Spitfire has a spacing between the rails of 1 & 3/16". Are the ones you need 90 degree? HK has some large electrics that might work for you. I have a set of their 90 degree ones on my 72" Spit that are 1" wide. Stalled on landing from about 3 feet in the air, the right gear hit hard and only slightly bent the mounting plate (which is removable). They are not expensive either, and I've not heard a bad thing about them.

Re: Platt FW 190 retract search

The spacing looks good, but the retracts need to have a 77 degree travel as did the full scale FW 190. The hobby King site is very tempting pricewise, but I don't see oleo legs that are 304 mm long. The Sierra site can supply gear & the air kit, but when converted to CDN, with tax, would be about $1000.00 !!
I think I will re examine the Hobby King offers or perhaps the EMS products.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Platt FW 190 retract search

For the oleos you may be able to use Robart struts. Mind you... if you already had trouble contacting Robart, maybe that's not much of an option.

Also, you could always try ordering the Robarts thru Great Hobbies or one of the other hobby shops that carries their stuff.

Try these guys. They seem to be pretty popular in the UK.

Re: Platt FW 190 retract search

I understand your frustration, what I do is look for the same model type by different designers and adapt my landing gear rails to suite that gear type.
The robart FW 190 gear may work, http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCHVN

The Shindin gear is also an option at $345US http://www.shindinmachine.com/FW190/FW190.html

cheers - ken k
