Re: eng stalls when i remove glow igniter

More information would be helpful, such as the engine mounting orientation, if this occurs at idle or high speed and the type of fuel. However, there are a couple of suggestions that will point the right direction:

A) You need to stay with a 4-stroke plug. A 2-stroke plug will not stay hot between firing cycles. If the 4-stroke plug still exhibits this behavior it is an indication it is too rich.

B) You also do not want to run a new plug in a new engine for the first tank or so. Microscopic wear particles that are the inevitable product of breakin will bond to the glow wire and seriously degrade its performance. Even if you do use a new plug be prepared to replace it with new again after the first tank or two.

C) Follow the manufacturers recommendations, but normally during breakin you want a rich mixture for a few full tanks, intermittently leaning it out slightly then going back to rich. Between tanks or if the engine is shut down after a high power run allow it to fully cool to help temp normalize the entire engine and all the internals. The mixture can slowly be leaned out as the breakin progresses.

This process almost points to maintaining external glow heat till it leans out a bit.

Re: eng stalls when i remove glow igniter

Thanks for your input. The eng is mounted in sideways, problem is at idle only. If i raise rpm it will stay running, as soon as i lower rpm it stalls. I am using 5% reg plane fuel, thanks.

I have an asp61. You will notice it needs a slightly higher idle than other four strokes to stay running. I use an os type f plug. This motor is not the most powerful but is on its third season and still going strong. I had it mounted sideways with the muffler down in an ultimate with no issues.

Todd

Oh and I use 15% four stroke fuel

Re: eng stalls when i remove glow igniter

I have this engine mounted inverted in a hanger 9 pulse. The engine runs great what i found with the idle is that you have to turn the low end mixture setting in away's from factory setting. doing so will give you a nice idle around 2500-2700 rpm and will not hert the engine any. if you do hapen to go to far you will find that the engine will bog on acceleration just keep playing with the low end screw and you will get it. remember to set the high end needle first. These are a great engine for the money good luck.

Re: eng stalls when i remove glow igniter

Not only does it have an effect on top end power. but nitro content also shows up in idle performance. As nitro content rises you will find your idle can drop lower and still remain reliable.

5% is relatively low. Personally I try to stay between 10-15%.

Had that problem on a new Saito once. My flying buddy said to me "It's way too rich! Lean it out a whole bunch you dummy!" Guess what! That fixed it!

Re: eng stalls when i remove glow igniter

Not saying that is what your trouble is but boy did I feel dumb when it worked for me! I was being too timid & just tweeking it a wee bit. So what was happening to me was that the extra fuel was dousing the glow plug & the only way it would run at all was with the battery power on or at full throttle. Too simple!

Good luck with yours! Merv
