I can't believe I did this I put a small hole in a new fuel tank
I wasn't thinking and I drilled through the firewall of a new ARF not realising that I put the fuel tank in to see if it would fit and I put a very small hole in the side of the tank. It's a tank for an arf and I don't know if I can get another one is there a way that could plug up the hole and keep using the tank for years to come?

Take the tank to the hobby shop and buy a new one. If you repair and it fails the airfrme and covering could easily be ruined.

repair? for a $4 tank? Not worth the effort or the possibility of failure.
You can always save that tank and build a SPAD and then see how that repaired tank might hold up: any type of repair might work--goop, heated tip on a soldering gun, etc. But not in any plane you place any value on. |

I did exactly the same thing a few years ago. I noticed that the drill kind of popped through one layer, then quickly through another. I fixed it with epoxy, but it weighed on my mind so much that I eventually swapped out the tank and threw it away.

Re: I can't believe I did this I put a small hole in a new fuel tank
Hi,
Many, Many years ago we used to have to make our own tanks out of any fuel proof plastic bottle we could find. To do this we would use a grommet and a piece of brass fuel tube. You may want to try the same thing except seal the brass fuel tube by crimping and soldering one end. To make a hole in a tank for a fuel line and seal it using a grommet and brass tube, the procedure is as follows. First, get a some grommets that a brass fuel tube will fit in very tightly. Second, drill a hole in the fuel tank (sounds like you may be able to skip this step ) just a little smaller than the center of the grommet (see attached diagram below). It is important the hole does not have any ragged edges. I used to use a hot soldering iron to make the hole. Third, push the grommet into the hole so part of the grommet is inside the tank and part is outside - again, see diagram. Fourth, push the fuel sealed fuel tubing into grommet - it should fit tightly and force the grommet center out to make a good seal. This should get you going until you can pick up a new tank. Let me know if this helps. Fly4Fun, Wayne Miller |

Re: I can't believe I did this I put a small hole in a new fuel tank
Talk about coincidence! I did the exact same thing just this evening while mounting the engine on my newest acquisition. While drilling the mount holes for the engine I drilled right into the fuel tank! I didn't even consider trying to repair it. Just went to my parts boxes and found another suitable tank.
An oldtimer in the club use to repair small holes in his tanks by using hot melt glue, the stick glue one puts in a glue gun. He claims it works great. But for the cost of a new tank, I personally, like others here, cannot see the risk worth it. I will definitely be more careful in future. They say wisdom is being able to recognize a mistake when made again. Hopefull it won't happen a next time!
