he, he, thanks for the link Flyboy. interesting stuff

I actually have some A123 cells ( wow - 30 of 'em ! got 'em off of ebay)

Considering doing a 50cc gas conversion on an Aeroworks 260.

May also consider using them for 40% systems like in Big Red.

Want to set up a "test" system to charge and discharge them for a while. That's why I was aking about charging systems.

Take Care Flyboy,

I'm debating the benefits of swapping out all my receiver packs to 2S VPX packs. (I'm talking my .40-.60 sized planes) I just need to decide if I get the Astro flight 123 charger, or something a little less specific.

This is the 50cc Aeroworks 260 I got from Gary at the February IMAC seminar. I have not finished it with the 50cc gas engine yet. I have been considering going electric with it, just for fun!!

Cheap yes, but there are limitations with this system.

I am still debating myself as right now I can't see any use for them. Nimh RX packs are over 2100mah and less than half the cost of these cells. In 40 to 60 size planes the weight difference is nothing to worry about. For power systems lipos are still lighter considering that these a123's will be used in smaller aircraft. I think it will be a very specific plane that they will work in. I will probably wait and see how others are using them.

I forgot to add the link to the lipodapter site in my earlier post.

BTW Bob congrats on reaching 1000 posts on this site!!!!

Canhos,

If you need a charger for lifepo, just wait a little bit. The thunder power 610 charger-balancer is coming. lipo, lifepo, Nixx. $129.99 CAD. How much is the astro? Also I saw that in RC groups are using 2 VPX or two M1 cells to power the rx.

The cost of the Astro isn't the issue. It's the fact that it is only good for 123cells.

I currently have around 6 nitro airplanes, that all get flown, but irregularily. Every time I decide to go fly, I do it on a whim, and may only have a couple hours to do it. By the time I charge the batteries, worry about their state of charge, cycle them once, then get out to the field, the day is shot.

With the VPX, I can have them sitting there charged at all times. The benefit for me is the lack of self discharge. They are also a low enough voltage that 2S pack doesn't need a regulator.

I think I'll try 1 pack out, and just use my Lipo charger for now. I'll have to babysit it while it charges, but I can test it out over the next couple months to see how works out.

I have been using a 3S lipo pack in my transmitter for about 2 years now, and it has been really nice to not have the batteries self discharge. I can charge today, fly a month from now. Or 6.

I know if I was starting from scratch and needed to purchase a new charger, I would go with the Xtrema but my charging needs are different than most.

They will also have a nice balancing system in the future.

That is the best way Canhos. Buy a pack and see how you like it. Personally, I am going to try out the new Rayovac hybrid nimhs in the spring. They are a new 2100mah nimh that has a low self discharge rate.
