Project Drop Box (Added Pictures)

Here is a project that I needed to do for a special man, my dad who passed away over a year ago. When he was alive we had discussions of spreading some his ashes via air in the wilderness areas of Alberta. It was never mentioned what aircraft was to be used.

Anyway here is what I have come up to accomplish this task and can be used later for flyby passes unloading confetti or sparkles.

First off is to have a box that would fit between the skids and I choose a plastic box that a gyro came in. Using some thin balsa wood for the lid, (Red Green would be happy about this) duct tape for the hinges & added a penny on each for weight to open lids.

Found a servoless payload release that was hard on the head to figure out how to mount it. I decided on a block of wood to strap the unit on.

Pre drilled all the mount holes needed in the frame.

After mounting all the components, use of a rubber band from the back frame to the release pin. I released a test run, the rubber was sticky so added a single servo arm which worked better with the release pin.

The largest cost for this project was the release unit, may revise the box lid later.

Thank for Looking

Pete

Re: Project Drop Box (Added Pictures)

Sorry people, did not realize that when pictures are in a private album that they are still not seen once in a post, but only by me. I hope this makes more sense now with the pictures, again sorry!!

Pete

PS: if anyone has a better solution for this project I’m open for ideas as not going to test fly until spring.

Re: Project Drop Box (Added Pictures)

I just was not happy with the bay doors on this box so I took the original lid and cut it in half. Glued a piece of wood to overlap the center crack and also to hold the other half in place. Again used the very cheap hinges as well pennies inside the lids to help with opening on lighter materials. This looks much cleaner for this project, I think!!

Re: Project Drop Box (Added Pictures)

Peter beause of negative preasure you may want to spring load the doors in the open position, try it first to make sure it'll do it correctly for you, very cool idea forsure, sorry to hear about your fathers passing.

Re: Project Drop Box (Added Pictures)

That's a nice little hei drop box. Love the idea of spreading someones ashes from the air. Not sure if its big enough to hold human ashes tho.

Someone also did that in Canada, it was his father's wish to do if from a model aircraft.

Re: Project Drop Box (Added Pictures)

Thanks Max,

Did see that thread before, very good tribute. I don’t have that much to drop as most went to various places in Canada as well as Holland where he spent a lot of time during WWll.

Jimmy,

It did cross my mind about a spring assist for opening the lids, I will know after a test run, thanks.

Re: Project Drop Box (Added Pictures)

No prob, you can hook the servo to a pin that you control to slide threw the two halves and hold it shut, once you click the switch the pin slides threw your eyelets and allows the door to open , the springs would load the doors so they have preasure to hold them open not closed, that way it opens and works, you land and then can close it up and flick the switch to lock it. You know what I mean, it works awesome for a candy dropper and will do exactly what you want it to do.
