How do I fix broken CA hinge?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
While doing my winter put-away-until-spring inspection on my Pitts, I noticed one of the CA hinges on the elevator had torn off.
Other than doing tail-surgery, does anyone have any "trick" methods of replacing a hinge?
The only way I can see doing it without major surgery, is to cut part-way through the parts to epoxy a Robart type hinge in. Or I could cut the other 3 hinges, and re-do them all.

Thanks in advance,

Ronm

How much throw does the surface have when not attached to the servo?
you may be able to cut a slot in the stab and elevator then put a crease in the hinge and incert it in the slot, then center the surface and ca it in like you normally would. If you can cut the slot the hard part is done but that will depend on surface throw and the thickness of the surface.

XV, I think you may be right.

James, I'm going to look into this idea. I tried it once with a smaller plane, but it didn't work well because of the limited spaceto work in. It might work with this plane.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron what kind of CA hinges were they?

I have some I will be bringing Saturday to Hamilton, have been using them for about 8 years and haven't had 1 fail yet (Touch balsa wood )

These are a little stiffer than most I have found on the market and may solve your problem.

See you Saturday!

They came with the GP Pitts. They looked nicely made when I put them in.
It's only the 2nd I've had fail. I think I will have to cut the other 3, and put 4 new ones.

Thanks Jim, see you Saturday!

The ones we get from Jim are "generically" packaged; no name

I use them in all my planes now (except combats )

I'll have to get some more this Saturday
