Re: dle gas engines

Home Hardware sells pre-mixed fuel that contains no ethanol and contains fuel stabilizer. They sell it in the lawn mower section in 1 litre tins. Not cheap but works great!

Re: dle gas engines

I have only ever used regular fuel in the dle engines . octane is the fuels ability to resist detonation and will not help with power unless the engine is detonating . to simply add octane to a engine when it is not needed is of no benefit .High compression ,high heat or overly advanced timing can cause detonation and require higher octane fuels. octane does not make the fuel more volatile . octane just allows you to put greater demands on the fuel. it's more likely your oil is causing gumming . I never use additives and I always leave fuel in my carbs when the planes are stored for the winter to keep them from drying up . I have had no carb problems in 20 years . Roger

Re: dle gas engines

I agree with Roger, I do however use stabil fuel stabilizer. Stops any chance of the fuel going bad for up to two years.

Re: dle gas engines

Regular gas here also. I may have to put a carb kit in every 2 or 3 years.

Re: dle gas engines

The DLE manual states that you only need an octane rating of 87-93 with the 30:1 oil mixture.

http://manuals.hobbico.com/dle/dleg0030-0031-manual.pdf

Anything more than that will be wasted or cause problems. Either way it is not required.

I would suggest that you use a good quality fuel stabilizer (Startron is good) and not worry about the gas Octane rating so much...

IF the fuel is gumming up the carb jets as you say - the problem could be easy

- How much do you mix up at a time 1 gallon ? 5 Gallons??
- How old is your gas?
- How accurate is your measuring of the oil mix?
- Where are you storing the gas? In a hot location that could cause evaporation?
- How much gas are you leaving in the plane's tank after a flight?
- Where are you storing the plane? In a hot location that could cause evaporation?

Often it is the 'Little Things' that cause us problems...

Good Luck.

Re: dle gas engines

Not to open the Oil discussion up but what oil are you using?

Re: dle gas engines

Myself I run stihl synthetic. Never had an issue with it. Some of the guys I fly with use amsoil synthetic. Just what I run I'm sure there are lots of others.

Re: dle gas engines

In this case, the only benefit of premium fuel is that it MAY not contain ethanol. I have used avgas from time to time but the lead content could become an issue. (plug fouling, etc)

Re: dle gas engines

Coleman camping fuel is white gas with no additives.
