Re: I [heart] FPV

Interesting picture. I have a couple ideas for FPV plane but figured most people would avoid looking through a prop.

Do you have any of your's with through the prop view?

Re: I [heart] FPV

through-the-prop view - oh yeah! That is what us scale-FPVers love to see (when I do scale FPV flying, maybe 1/4 of the time). Can see many planes with prop in front on my Vimeo channel (Katana, Albatros, Cap232, some others): https://vimeo.com/user10906871/videos

But you need a CCD-type video cam to have naturalistic prop view. Otherwise we get 'windowblinds' from the CMOS type video cams - Gopro, Mobius and a lot of low end cams are CMOS sensors. CCD cams start at about $30 for a good one.

OTOH, CMOS have a lot of good features: some take HD video, most are small, lightweight, more-aero camera size.

Still with CCD cams, you can get the resonant rpm problem: once the prop rpm matches any multiple of the CCD frame rate, the prop will appear to be still (when it isn't) ...

OK. So CCD is the key. I sure never liked the window blinds in some on-board recordings I have done.

I was thinking of the Attitude goggles so I would just have to replace the camera.

Re: I [heart] FPV

A couple flying buddies recently picked up the Attitudes (they are new to FPV). Worked great out of the box, with the stock CMOS camera. I flew one of their planes with the Atti and it is indeed a great choice. Just need to ensure you get the best antennas though - makes a big difference to enjoying FPV.

You can use pretty much any FPV camera with the Fatshark/IRC systems, as long as you mind the camera voltages. Fatshark/IRC run the vTx and cam at 5 volts. Most FPV vTx and cams on the market run on 12V. Plenty of options to regulate the voltage, however.

This is probably the most popular CCD camera on the market by far today, among FPVers: http://www.surveilzone.com/sony-supe...mm-lens-cc1332

But observing among other scale-FPVers, I would say the HD cams with CMOS sensors are somewhat more popular and gaining. Becuase they want the cam to also record HD video. A couple threads:

Re: I [heart] FPV

I find the strobe effect varies with RPM.

In the picture above, I had to adjust the throttle just right to freeze the prop in that position.

At other RPM's it flickers at different rates. To be honest, I never really noticed it enough for it to become annoying. I just tend to ignore it.

I love seeing the prop in the picture. On this plane, I feel like I am flying full scale. On my mustang, I swear I am at the controls of a real warbird!
I find its also easier to land "from the cockpit" when I can see part of the plane in the picture.

Some of my other planes have no prop in the picture, like pushers and twins, and they are just as much fun to fly, but are "different" and certainly produce an obstruction free video. It all depends on taste and the kind of plane you want to FPV.

Interesting point about CMOS vs CCD, Salt.

haha, I can do it with the CMOS on my Katana too ...

.. but the trick is I have the brake on and just chop the throttle

other thing I should mention about CMOS like Gopro and Mobius is, the electronics are so busy in them making HD that they suffer from latency of up to 1/10 of a second. Still, those two cameras make excellent FPV cams, and I am using the Mobius more and more as my old cam on board. It just has too much latency for a twitchy aircraft.

edit - and the CCD invariably perform MUCH better than CMOS at dusk and night time.
