Opinions needed on wing loading/engine match
Hey everyone . New member here looking for opinions/help.
I recently bought a nicely built Balsa USA Nieuport 17. 54" wingspan, 6.5 lbs, 683 Sq. Inches, for 21oz./sq. ft loading. Question: the builder installed a Saito 40. This seems very marginal to me. (11 x 6 prop.) Opinions??? Thanks!

Re: Opinions needed on wing loading/engine match
Looks to be in the range recommended by the specs. Depending on weight you would have 75-95 watts per pound. That should be enough power to fly it scale.
Is it actually 6.5 pounds? That woudl be around 75 watts per pound. No 3D'r but should fly fine. I assumed a 4 stroke that the specs call for.

Re: Opinions needed on wing loading/engine match
One option would be swapping the Saito 40 for a 56-62 as they should be minimally different in weight and dimensions. You could also try different props. This is what is on the Saito prop selection chart:
Saito-40a 10x7, 11x6

Re: Opinions needed on wing loading/engine match
If it is one of the original Saito 40s, it will be marginal. I have one in a scratch built 6ft Cub that is super light (around 4 lbs). And let's just say it flies very realitically. I would agree with Cougar429's recommendation.

Re: Opinions needed on wing loading/engine match
I personally would use a .45 to .56 2S with a 12X4' propeller. This will give you the lower speed needed for a WW1 biplane and lots of pull for takeoff and climb. The negative thing is the 2S noise but a good muffler will cure that. I have found in small 4S engines that they are not very powerful.

Re: Opinions needed on wing loading/engine match
Hmm. All good thoughts. I have a O.S 52 FS in a small stunt bipe right now that is a bit overkill: maybe I'll swap them. I do have a few good .46 2S sitting around too. Decisions decisions....and yes, it is 6.5 lbs. I don't mind realistic/scale perfromance, it just seems to me that this little 40 won't leave me much in reserve.

Re: Opinions needed on wing loading/engine match
With scale, especially for one sporting a radial engine, I prefer 4-strokes due to a more scale sound and the ability to swing a large prop slowly. In many cases the larger diameter prop is a must to work beyond large round cowls.

Re: Opinions needed on wing loading/engine match
I agree, but my budget wont allow for the purchase of an engine right now and with the .46 on hand, I'll go with it for now. Later I'll prob up it to a 50+ four stroke. Or maybe one of the new small gas engines.
