Paint for plastic

Just wondering - I often use Testors model paint for wheel pants and trim, but is there a better brush paint anyone can recommend? I don't really like fussing with sprays. I haven't had bad luck with Testors but I don't think it's terribly fuel proof.

Thanks Max - is that available at hobby shops? I've never heard of it. I'm guessing the enamel version is what to use?

Re: Paint for plastic

Yes, it is used extensively by scale plastic modelers. The colours are a lot more varied and accurate than the standard "rainbow" colour palette available by Testors.

You should be able to get it from plastic model sources.

Re: Paint for plastic

I have some 50+ year old Humbrol cans of paint if you need some. (I have them but I'm just joking about shipping them).
Can't believe they are still good.

Re: Paint for plastic

Oh yeah, I recognize that stuff, thanks! I'll look for it.

I was using a clear coat over the Testors which worked well, but it's certainly not great. Really good for pilots and other interior detail though.

Re: Paint for plastic

Tole paints. dirt cheap, tons of colours. Michael's sells Americana Clear, specifically meant to go over their tole paints, in satin, matte, or gloss, and it's fuel proof. Just did a Top Flite P-39, 100% water based tole paints, thinned and airbrushed, but it also goes on with a brush extremely well. I've tested the Americana Clear on a couple of canopy parts, with or without paint, and so far it's been compatable with no issues.

Re: Paint for plastic

I was talking to a guy at the LHS, he told me that Humbrol is not fuel proof. I don't think it matters much, I'm going to clear-coat it anyway. I got a couple Humbrol enamel paints and a Model Master enamel. Very pleased with how they apply, both dry without any paint strokes showing up, just smooth.

It's sad though, that the LHS guys don't seem to know that much about anything having to do with building anymore. So few people are building vs. ARFs that a lot of things aren't available, and certainly there are very few kits in the shops. My big concern is that companies like Du-Bro don't go under.

Re: Paint for plastic

Something tells me that LHS guy wasn't as familiar with Humbrol as he thinks he is.

Humbrol has been used extensively by RC model builders in the UK for decades and not one of them has complained they weren't fuel proof.

Unless of course, it could be that Humbrol has modified their paint formula in the last decade and I am not aware of it.

Nailed it He kind of looked like Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys which didn't help his credibility either. Or maybe when I said "fuel proof" he thought I said "fool proof"...one look at me and he said "no"
