Sbach 65, Pro-Bro style

I've got another profile plan on the table. Ron Wilson's Sbach3D 65.

I have torn the guts outta my CG Ultimate to find a new home in this build. DLE20, Hitec digi's (5965's,5625's), Tech Aero IBEC and rx will all be goin' over. We are in amidst of some airfield issues so I need somethin' to fit the privately owned area I have to fly in now. This fits the bill!

The Balsa Store also offers these as a kit. But Clay needs at least 5 pre-orders in order to make a run worthwhile. I didn't want to wait that long so I begged Ron for a copy of his plans. He fired off the e-mail and I began piecing the tiled PDF almost immediately. I looked at the list of materials and fired off another e-mail to Clay for all the wood. He said I forgot a few things and tossed them in the package. I am eagerly awaiting to see what it is I forgot, lol.

The 5/8" carbon tube the kit required came from Goodwinds.

The profile gear is from Outlaw Hobby Products.

I also have a profile muffler for the soon to be transplanted DLE20 from ValleyView R/C.

A little inspiration...some neat flyin' from TFC's Colton!

The plans will have a subtle change to the nose. I'll extend it like in the bottom video and shape it to have the chin included...a bit stubby as per the plans for a 'bach imho.

Re: Sbach 65, Pro-Bro style

I got wood! Clay sent some good stuff! I just need a couple 5/16" x 5/8" x 48" sticks to complete. He even included some pre-made hatches with covers and the little servo wire exit cut-outs. I'm sure there is more that I haven't inventoried, yet! A trip to Lester's is in order sooner than expected.

Looking forward to this build. I've been thinking about getting on the waiting list for the next batch.

Re: Sbach 65, Pro-Bro style

Got a good start on the wings. My first piece of advice is to get the plan set from Ron, or get the kit from The Balsa Store. That way you won't get tiled plans...my put together puzzle isn't exact creating a bit of guessing on my part.

Most of the first day I spent cutting out all the parts for the wing on the scroll saw. I got a chance to dry fit mock up...considering using my CARF bolts instead of the standard bolt/t-nut.

Re: Sbach 65, Pro-Bro style

Well, I bit the bullet and did it. The bolts are 10mm and since I already drilled out for the dowel, I had to add a washer to make sure I had enough bite back there. The front one I was able to utilize the 3/32 ply just like the CARF. The wing attach block and the "pin" side slide together rather nicely. A little sticky backed 180 grit wrapped around the 3/8 piece of doweling made it possible. I've got a couple ideas for hatches including just one big one. Now to lay down some wax paper and get gluing.

Re: Sbach 65, Pro-Bro style

Progress...but Elmer's Pro-Bond Max makes for some long set/cure times.

Wings are still rough needing more trimming and final sanding. Went the two hatch route seeing as Clay was kind enough to provide the two already! Battery tray in the left wing and I might try to put the Rx in the fuse, but there is plenty of room in that bay if I can't. I just want to limit the amount of connections necessary to the least. Three I figure, fingers crossed.

The stuff from ValleyView came in. The picture on their website doesn't do justice for that little muffler. A piece of bling for it!

Re: Sbach 65, Pro-Bro style

Completed the wings with final sanding ready for covering. Still need to assemble the ailerons, but the hard work is done. Fits all together like it should.

Undecided if I want to hinge the hatches and if so, how? A couple CA hinges? ??:

Re: Sbach 65, Pro-Bro style

Thanks, Nick! I've gotten another suggestion to use covering too. I'm still undecided.

Progress...got the control surfaces done. I tried to keep the lightest of the provided 3/8" stock for the rear surfaces. This is supposed to come out tail heavy so not only did wood get scrutinized, so did the dimensions. I replaced the 3/8 x 3/8" cross bracing with 5/16 x 3/8".

In my haste in getting the h-stab done...I forgot the part where I was supposed to take note of the piece of hardwood was to be placed. I just was truckin' along and put a balsa stick where the hardwood was supposed to go. Not until it was cured did I realize my mistake. Well I had some carbon strip from another project left over and inserted it in the supposed to be hardwood strip of balsa. Kinda like PA FiberFusion, lol. We'll see how it stands up. It is just as stiff, I think.

While waiting on my parts to cure on the table, I had a chance to get a headstart on the fuse. I assembled the redesigned nose block. I also heard that "if I had a chance to do it again, I would move the ignition to the hole in the chin" from the Pro-Bro's. I will try that out right off the bat by not cutting one side of the ply so I can mount it there.
