Re: 50cc P51 Mustang Voodoo Air Racing Build

I will hit a financial wall VERY SOON!!!

I still have not found a full cowl I can use, so the engine and exhaust solution is still up in the air. That will slow me down as well.

I also will be taking my time with the next step after the wings are joined. I want to be sure my gear door solutions are well thought out.

Besides, the reward for all my hard work is to sit there admiring it for months..... before I dump it on the maiden!!!

Re: 50cc P51 Mustang Voodoo Air Racing Build

Sorry I did not get around to posting the progress yesterday!:-|
After I finished the right wing, I decided I had earned an afternoon off!

Got the left wing done and ready for joining!

I will hold off on joining the wing until I have figured out my gear door setup. It is much easier to work with one wing at a time!

I will also have to reshape/recreate some of the formers for the belly radiator intake before I can join the wings.

Re: 50cc P51 Mustang Voodoo Air Racing Build

I took a look at the plans and have decided on a plan of attack for reshaping the radiator intake.

To keep things simple, I used the cut out on RC1 as a my new height of the intake.

It is slightly thinner than the scale height, but I think it will look ok.

TIP: The blue curved thing you see in the picture is a drafting tool I picked up about 20 years ago. It is rubber coated and filled with lead or something. It allows you to shape curves easily and will hold it's shape and provide a clean edge. It has been quite handy an MANY projects!

Re: 50cc P51 Mustang Voodoo Air Racing Build

These are all the pieces involved in the reshaping of the radiator intake.

I will shape the intake the same way the manual says to shape the upper portion of the cowl and belly portion of the radiator intake that is a part of the fuse. I will use 1/4" or 1/2" planks and shape them after they are glued in place.
The portion of the intake that is forward of piece "SS" will be a solid block of balsa.

Re: 50cc P51 Mustang Voodoo Air Racing Build

The only piece that will have to be made completely new is the piece marked as "Die-cut 1/8" Plywood Radiator Keel". This piece has quite a different curve then the original.
