Special Zone Meeting today -- election of new Deputy Zone Director
http://www.maac.ca/events/event_details.php?eid=2613
It's the police station on Major Mackenzie Drive in Richmond Hill to the west of Yonge Street. I'm going to be there, unless I get a support call-in from work this morning (probably not, this is the third mainframe upgrade and the last two went smoothly with no problems.) Look at as a learning experience: how many of us have had the opportunity to get inside a police station via the front door? I'm willing to bet dollar-to-doughnuts that those of us who have been inside usually went in through the "back door", the one with the cameras and locks, and not-comfortable benches.... Did that on my "vacagtion from hell" in England this year. |

No, John, just a wry comment on how many of us had a mis-spent youth with various degress of interaction with the police. My wife says that my sense of humour is so dry that not many people who don't know me personally don't get it.
My last enounter with the police was a trip to the station in Crawley, East Sussex -- I was a driver in an accident and a foreign national to boot, resulting in a trip to the station to take my statement and to determine the course of action needed. Yes, I went in through the "back door" and I got the full treatment, except for being fingerprinted. Anyway, the meeting went like a well-run club workshop -- about twenty minutes on the business portion (election of the new Deputy Zone Director -- Bill Thorne from the Ajax club) followed by two hours of presentations on running public and scale events, how to attact and keep new members, flight instruction, and nailing landing approaches from an instructor's viewpoint. A great meeting with lots of ideas, and no boredom! Last edited by Guest; 02-05-2011 at 04:07 PM. |

Re: Special Zone Meeting today -- election of new Deputy Zone Director
Brent, the meeting started off with a light lunch sandwich buffet. No doughnuts that I could see.
Having a mid-winter zone meeting as a workshop or seminar session is a great idea for everyone to get together, take care of any needed MAAC business (eg, elections or appointments, or new news on items like insurance, plus feedback and concerns) and get in some lectures or demonstrations. One take-away item for myself is that I really do have to work on my basic flight skills -- can I perform a correct landing cuircuit without wandering all over the sky. Thirty years in the hobby and I'm looking at hooking up with an instructor to get a serious refresher to get rid of my bad habits or to tune the skills that I've let slide with flying park flyers ratehr than substantial aircraft. |

I've had a real dry spell in terms of getting out to the field over the last four years or so, so I know that I'm rusty as all get-out. Proved that with my Escapade last summer -- three flights and then lost it by over-banking in a procedure turn and letting it get way, way out. Plane's almost ready to get put back in the air (other activities took precedence) and I've got two more projects to try to finish this winter. It's all a matter of timing (when I get home or if I get time on Saturdays) as to whether or not I can get out to the field before sunset. |
