87" Lanier RC YAK 54 Build Thread

Following the lead-up to this aircraft https://www.rccanada.ca/bb/viewtopic....794&highlight= I'll go ahead and do a build thread for this plane http://www.lanierrc.com/lrcprivate/r...87yak54arf.htm

First, I'd like to thank my LHS Leading Edge Hobbies (www.leadingedgehobbies.com) in Kingston for sticking to their original quoted price even after Lanier added on $100 USD. This plane is a great deal for what you get. So here goes:

Weigh - in:
All parts supplied by Lanier to go into the air = 111.4 oz, or 11.96 lbs
My zdz 50 NG with bolly 22x8 prop, ignition, and wraparound pitts supersonic muffler = 4 lb, 6.7 oz. So, before this plane gets any electronics, glue, etc it is flying at 16.4 lbs. I have a breakdown of weights if anyone is interested. The advertised flying weight is 16.5 to 18 lbs. Stock, I can't see it being less that 18 ever. However, a thread at the "other" site http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_34...tm.htm#3488870 suggests that there is a lot of room for a diet. I'm not going to consider the carbon fibre route, as it was the low price that attracted me to this plane and I don't plan to pour gobs of $$$ into CF.
The control surfaces are HUGE! Some have suggested losing weight by going to a one servo per aileron (it is stock with 2 per), but looking at the size of these things, I'd not suggest it. The tough part will be getting the weight down at the tail so that the light weight 50's have a chance of balancing it.
The covering is fantastic. There was very minor damage during shipping (the LE anti rotation pin on the right wing got pushed into the wing and broke the tip off the 2nd rib.
The cowl is huge, I'm sure you'd hide a 100 twin no trouble (not suggesting it). The ARF is laser cut, and well done. Fit seems good so far, the wing tube was slightly loose in the fuse, and extra tight on the wings.
So far, I'm very please with my purchase.
More to come...

Cmon Peter... we need some pics.. stop building it and take some pics.

I think that one HS595TG, (333 oz on 6.0v ), per aileron will be MORE then enough. That is what I am using on my EF 87" Yak 54 as well as 1 for the rudder. So I thought what the heck and went with 5955s all the way around... that's one per elevator half!

Hmm depending on what batteries you are going with you should be able to get it under 18#s until you put gas in. Remember gas is roughly 7 lbs per gallon. My kit came with a 20oz tank but to save weight and since I don't want to fly for 30 minutes plus, I am opting for a 16oz tank. that should be more then enough for Startup, waiting, takeoff, 2 sequences, wait to land , land and taxi back into the pitts.

I Haven't weighed my EF Yak yet as I don't have accurate scale. Most are coming out around 15.5 - 16.5 lbs dry. Yes a lightweight engine may require you move your batteries really close to the front of the model.

Looking forward to your feedback as I am always looking for another Yak or two.

Hey Peter.... man that was fast.... 1 minute from when I asked!

See on your ailerons you've already got an advantage... yours is the first large scale Yak I've seen that have gotten the ailerons correct by including the servo tab on the end. So you are going to get some aerodynamic help moving those huge puppies around!

I like the way they kept the cowl opening on the front end more to scale as well, not so closed down. You might want to think of blocking that big gapping hole off though. With mine i am going to make a round f/g plate to glue to the inside of the cowl. It will have an opening cut into it just big enough for the cylinder of the DA 50. That way I know for sure that I will have a larger exit area for the cooling air to leave the cowl.

Jim Moss did this on a little .46 size Su-31 he has and he said it really made a difference.

An added benefit will be that she will really keep the speed back on the downlines.

Yeah, I like the counterbalance on the tips. I'm not sure it'll do much, but it is different.
My hand in the photos is not because I'm a hand model like George Costanza, but I wanted to give some size perspective.
