how to charge a battery properly

Hey, could somebody tell me in detail how to properly maintain a battery ( SMC "intellect" 6-cell, 1200 NiMh) it is for my MRS4 (i have the Mamba25 6800 Comp. if it changes anything but i wouldnt think so) and all i have to charge it right now is a power supply. my dad knows his electronics pretty well but would like me to ask for the proper procedures just incase it is different from what he knows. If you would like to type up a novel for me to read or show me a link to a good site is your choise (or dont do either and let others answer, lol)
