Best all round 40-50 modern "as of today" 2s engine

This may open some debate but here goes:

What is the best all round 2017 forward 40 to 50ish 2 stroke engine? I am putting it out there on this engine range as if you go smaller (25-), then electric makes sense or if you go larger (60+) then gas makes sense.

I want to discuss current and forward looking models only. We all have great experience and nostalgia with some make/model from the past ... many of which are out of production. Not interested in those. Take your past experience and learnings, look at current engine line ups from all makes and chime in on what you think is today's best buy.

General criteria:
- carb tuning reliability. easy or finicky but great once set?
- power for displacement. packs good expected power into the case size
- construction materials. ABC ABN Ringed other?
- bushed or BB, probably doesn't matter
- widely available to buy anywhere
- future longevity, available parts, drop in replacement
- price point

Point of asking: If a person is out shopping for a new/used engine for my 40-50 sized sport aerobat, what engines should he/she be looking at?

Again, no posterior nostalgia please. Only what is on the shelf today going forward. If it cannot be found in the hobby shop or on the manufacturers current lineup on their website, then cannot count it.

Re: Best all round 40-50 2s engine

You can't compare the glow engines made now with the great engines that used to be made. Every Engine maker has gone cheap to save a buck. Cheap bearings, plastic cages, ABL linings the list of cost savings goes on and on. The only make I know that is still made half decent is the Saito 4-Strokes. OS changes models so often that parts are discontinued. But Saito parts fit many different Saito motors and should be good for years to come. If your looking for a modern engine buy what ever is for sale, it'll be a crap shoot.
Cheers Floyd

Re: Best all round 40-50 modern "as of today" 2s engine

I will go first.
First up vote is Super Tiger G51 ringed or the G45 ABC. Current.
- very smooth and reliable, after a patient breakin period and spray bar is tweaked
- gobs of power for the size. same power between them actually.
- low nitro fuel 5% is best. 10% is OK, do not go any higher without adding a head shim cut from a pop can, or you may have tuning problems.
- reasonably priced
- been around a long time and will be around a long time yet in the future, current off the shelf
- I don't know about getting parts for them though. .... I've never had to get parts for them, so I guess that says something there.

Ive sold off all my glow stuff, but if one can still source a Thunder Tiger Pro .46 they sure are a solid performer for a fair price. I loved my OS .46 but I am not sure they are $200 good by anybody's standards. Seeing GH carries evoloution and OS only....tells me the market is just flat for nitro motors these days.

Re: Best all round 40-50 modern "as of today" 2s engine

Have you considered a small gasser like this: https://www.valleyviewrc.com/rcgf-10cc-gas-engine or https://www.rcgfusa.com/rcgf-15cc-enigne

I haven't run either of these but their design is better than some of the other small options, they are purpose built gas engines rather than converted glow designs. Not a huge weight or cost penalty.

I know glow still has a loyal following but there are numerous advantages to gas...generally more reliable, maintain tune better, much much cleaner, cheaper and more available fuel, better fuel economy, spark plugs last longer than glow plugs, tune is less critical etc.

Not saying glow power doesn't have any advantages, but something to consider if you haven't already!

Claude,

Curious, is your Suptretigre G45 ABC made in Italy or in China?

thanks

Re: Best all round 40-50 modern "as of today" 2s engine

Most of the engines that are 30 to 40 years old are of better quality and last longer than most of the modern engines made in China. The ASP engines were one of the worst. I had five, on every one the plating on the inside of the cylinder was coming off. A friend of mine had several Thunder Tiger .46 engines and they work good and seem to last well. I have several engines with a wore out con rod big end due to poor design and the modern fuels with only 16% oil. Enya engines are still available and have the same quality they had years ago.
