Im fairly new to electrics, and im wondering if anyone has any links to any sites that talk about maintence for electric motors, i have already cooked a 13 turn, and dont want to make the same mistake twice.

How did you cook it ??? Was it overgeared ( pinion too big )
A 13 turn is a fairly hot motor, I assume it was in your B4. A 13 turn is also very high rpm. You should start with a smaller pinion so the motor has a chance to run through its rpm range and not always be under load.

You should gear it so that the motor reach's its peak rpm just before the end of the longest straight at whichever track you are running on. If there are no long straights then gear it even lower. Short sections and tight infields require quick acceleration. A pinion too large that does not let the motor unload will keep the motor under stress all the time causing the heat to continually climb.

Now with a taller gear ( smaller pinion ) the rear wheels will have a tendancy to break loose more easily when you apply throttle.
There are 2 ways to work with this. Change motors, Use a 13 turn with 2 winds or even three winds. Max RPM is the same, but they have a more gentle curve getting there ( a little less initial torque ).
Pro's usually go this route.
But since we are normal people without sponsors and a case full of motors at our disposal. We can adjust the initial on power from our speed controls.
A lot of speed controls have a little adjustment potentiometer. Turn it down.
This reduces the initial on power ( call it traction control...kind of )
You will get the same top end but not as violent.

3 other things... Is your drive train free? Drag in the drive train is extra load on the motor. How long you running for? Typical races are 5-6mins long. If you are running a high capacity pack until the car is at a crawl (more than 5-6mins), you are cooking the motor. And lastly, driving habits. Throttling too agressively will cause a motor to overheat. Remember the trigger is not an on-off switch.
