Great Planes J-3 cub ARF 81"

Hi everyone,
Im new to this forum and only recently started flying rc planes(Aug 2009). I started out with the 3 channel mini super cub from hobbyzone(tough little plane) and about 2 months after that I bought an E flite apprentice RTF from Horrizon Hobby, I didnt know about Great Hobbies here in Canada. Im still flying that plane and love it. I always stick a mini dv camera on the plane before I fly, gives me something to watch on days i cant fly. I have made a set of aluminum skis for the apprentice and they work great. There are several videos of my progress on youtube under the username "supercub1974" if you are interested. Anyway I have recently purchased a Great planes J-3 cub 81" ARF from Great hobbies and have a couple questions. I am thinking of going with a O.S .55 engine for this plane. Will I need to buy a different muffler than what is supplied to fit the cowling? And I have also purchased a Spektrum DX7 TX and a AR6200 RX from great hobbies, what servos do you recommend for the cub. Im a little confused there are so many to choose from, all the manual says is 47 oz@4.8 volts? Any input would be great.

Thanks

I use Futaba S3003 or S3004 on mine. They are more than adequate.

Re: Great Planes J-3 cub ARF 81"

As you are running Spektrum gear probably best to stick with JR or Hitec servos so you don't have to modify the futaba plugs to fit your rx.
Simple analog servos like the JR 537 will do the job.
For more torque you can go with the JR/Spectrum 821 digitals.
Hitec has equivalents to these and maybe a hitec user can provide the model numbers for you.

Re: Great Planes J-3 cub ARF 81"

HiTec make some great servos and they have universal connectors. The HS425BB has 46 oz-in torque @ 4.8 volts and would probably be good for all your needs. You could get the HS485HB for the tail section is you like, it has 66.6 oz-in of torque @ 4.8 volts and karbonite gears. Great hobbies sells these - $13.99 for the HS425BB and $15.49 for the HS485HB. Hard to beat.

Re: Great Planes J-3 cub ARF 81"

5 of the same servo will be fine on the cub. Wouldn't think you would need more torque on the rudder/tailwheel just decent gears in the servo because of the bouncing/banging of the tailwheel. The extra torque would more likely be needed on aileron/elevator due to forces on those surfaces in flight. But the cub is a fairly gentle flyer not a 3d special so 5 decent standard servos will do the job. Hitec make good servos and are less expensive than JR. But do a google search on potential issues with their carbonite gears failing. Think it has more to do with gassers than nitro but honestly can't remember again maybe a hitec user can clarify.

Re: Great Planes J-3 cub ARF 81"

I use a lot of the Hitec HS 485's and am quite satisfied with them.
I would like to suggest that a 4 stroke engine of about 91 size is more likely to fly the plane better than a 55.

Re: Great Planes J-3 cub ARF 81"

Nice job on the cub. Is it the great planes 81"? And did you put some dihedral in the wing or just glue it together flat, looks like there may be a little angle there, mine is just flat. Also how do you adjust your carb? Can you post a pic of the bottom of the cowl please. Thanks
