Re: Converting large nitros to gas ..... How to?

I think he wants to run the engines on gasoline instead of glow fuel

Google it. There is a guy who makes the kits, and they seem quite reasonable in pricing. He has videos on youtube for a YS 160DZ that he did a kit for.

Re: Converting large nitros to gas ..... How to?

I think it is almost same cost as getting a new gas engine. I have a ST 4500 and after pricing everything out it did not make much sense.

Re: Converting large nitros to gas ..... How to?

Most glow engines use bronze bushings on the upper and lower con rod knuckles.
They require a very high oil content ratio in the fuel. Like 20%. Most glow fuel is around 20 % oil.
Gas engines run on a much much lower oil to gas ratio. A range of 1% to 3%. Not enough oil for bronze bushings. You can't add much more oil or you just end up fouling the spark plug very quickly. That and the engine just won't run right.

Gas engines have needle bearings in the upper and lower con rod knuckles.
First thing to check on any engine you are thinking of converting, is to see if that particular engine has bushings or needle bearings.
Some glow engine manufacturer's tried selling their engines as gas models several years ago. They slapped a gas carb and ignition on their current glow motor. All failed in short order.

Re: Converting large nitros to gas ..... How to?

100% agree with Brad, I have a Supertigre 4500 converted to gas & it has the needle bearing con rod. If it didn't I would not run it because bushings would not get enough oil, but my 4500 runs like a champ on gas & they are a super tough engine. I would not bother converting your smaller Supertigre though.
