aftermarket
After joining the yahoo group for southbendlathe, I have learned that the attachment has been added after manufacturing. It is a forward/reverse lever so that I don't have to switch the rotation of the lathe to feed backwards. What the pervious owner has done is make up a coupler, severed the lead screw, and has allowed to to become engaged by using the lever. When the lever is pulled backwards, the feed is forward. There are two collars that travel over the threaded rod that will kick out the powerfeed when yuo get to a pre-determined distance. If you look at the pictures, you can figure it out. I've already found a lead screw from EBAY so I may return it to its original condition.

Hi Peter:
Just sold my old 9 in. Southbend last year when I retired and sold out the small motor business. Had it for 25 yrs. When the leather flatbelt rotted off i bought a Gilmer, cogged, timing belt, whatever they're called now, and turned it inside out. Had to take the headstock apart to get it on, but worked fine. i have a small 5 in. Japanese Toyo lathe for home use with a vertical mill attachment that bolts to the back of the lathe. Have fun. Gord. |
