The Winter Nationals

Many of you have been hearing about an event we're planning called the "Winter Nationals". This was going to be an outdoor oval race in February. The premise of this event was to run an oval race where the features and banked turns were entirely made of ice and snow. Our whole goal was to run an event that would not be in a traditional place for RC racing. The entry fee would be kept to a minimum to entice new racers to come out. The event was to take place at the Event Centre in Barrie.

Unfortunately we have run into problems with insurance that have been fatal to our planning this event. As many of you may know the insurance industry is inflating it's rates continually complaining that they are losing money. Despite the fact that the industry reports profits in the billions every year. For us to run this event at our chosen venue we required $5 million in liability coverage for the event. Despite our shopping around we could not find insurance under $1000.00 for one day. To accept these terms for insurance would drive the registration fees higher than what we feels is reasonable. My personal opinion is that this is a prime example of how the insurance industry is cashing in on low risk events just to line their pockets.

However this is not all bad news. With locations like John's Hobby and Gamers Lair, there is the possibility we will still be bringing you a winter event to beat the RC winter blaws.

We at offroadrc.ca thank you you for your time and continued participation.

What about creating a consortium of sorts? Like helibri said, purchase or lease a plot of land, change a nominal fee for races, volunteering for track up keep etc...???

Either way the owners have liability issues that need to be addressed...and in comes the crisco...

The owners, or "the consortium" will have some liability issues, of that I agree.

But, if the property were private, then you can legally circumvent the need for insurance.

How do you ask? If we are all there, and fees are paid ahead of time for races, then it can conceivably be considered a "private function"

The next thing is to keep any advertising to nil or a bare minimum. Meaning if we had a LHS sponsoring, then they can have banners flying all around the area.

What they can have... bodies, table clothes, maybe a tent etc.

As long as you can make it look like a private function you shouldnt have any problems.

Typical insurance for a property will cover damages for such things as fire and theft when not around.
