Some progress on the right wing, the white line is the wing folding line, dotted chart tape is panel lines, and pencil lines are for rivet detail. The aluminum panels are the gun bay access hatches. Last photo shows the 3 X .50 cal machine gun barrels. So far, so good!

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Right wing now has all panel lines, flush rivets, hatches, and wing fold line done, and first primer coat to cover. Any rivets that are a bit deep will get a spot of filler, prior to a second, final coat of primer. Next will be to copy the lines over to the left wing, and repeat. Then they'll be ready for paint.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Right wing is almost done, top of the wing got it's final coat of primer, flap was glassed, sanded, filled, and primed, and I built the aileron, sanded, covered in solartex, after fitting, and a coat of primer on it as well. Installed the aileron hinge cover too, which went very quickly. Right flap controls are all set up, I'll have to setup the aileron controls tomorrow, then copy everything I've done on the right wing, over to the left wing. Few more days, and both wings will be finished, and ready for paint. Then I need to tackle the fuse, do all the round rivet heads, hatches, etc.

Definitely NOT a kit for a newbie builder! She's gonna look awesome once she's complete. Sure hope we can get a test flight in before you have to switch coasts!

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

An observation: Metal hinge rod running thru the plywood hinge point, eventually you will see wear and the holes elongate. 2 solutions, first is to harden the hinge point with CA or what I do is put a servo grommet into the plywood hinge point.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

You Have a lot of patience Dave doing all those panel lines. Nice work as always.
Good tip using the eyelets. I never thought about that. Now I know what to do with all the extras I have kicking around here.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Just there to hold things in place Mike, there will be a brass insert into the ply to act as a bushing. It's a bit of a pain, but you're bang on that if you don't do something, the recommended, shove a threaded bolt through there would wreck it in no time.
Servo grommets, if they're the right dia, are indeed much easier than cutting tiny bits of brass tube!

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Undersides of the wings, ailerons, flaps, and elevators all done in sky, using Benjamin moore Aura, latex exterior paint. Mixed 50:50 with water. Just take the FS numbers in, and they computer match/mix it. Great stuff. You can see the rib-stitching and rivet details quite nicely.
