The end of glow?
Hi again for another question! My dealer told me that he don't sell glow no more (exept small ones for trainers), only 2 and 4 strokes gas engines. Is it right that is about the end of glows engines? Thanks for opinions !

Re: The end of glow?
No, especially when you can get deals at Hobby King right now with four stroke glow ASP's. Glow will be around a long time. They are just being short sighted.
Large electric require $150-$200 batteries in Canada so that may be their tactic. (ie. selling a $200 battery every 2 years versus a $200 glow engine every 10 years might be more lucrative) I fly small electric but when it comes to laying out $200 for a battery I will pass and buy in the USA for 1/2 price online or buy a glow engine. Maybe gas but it smells.

One thing about the USA no sale is too small. I have seen someone standing at the counter with several customers behind him in line and he wants one nut, bolt and washer. He was treated the same as the next customer in line (which was me) who spent over 50 bucks in fasteners. Propshop Hobbies in Warren Michigan (my favorite hobby shop) is a prime example of customer service. I have watched the owner Matt spend as much time with a young fellow putting a 5 dollar steering link on a buggy and adjusting it for him as he has spent with the next customer buying an expensive radio or kit/engine. Great owner operators are out there but they’re becoming a rarity. Canadian retailers and suppliers need to get a grip with the internet there is no longer a reason to be held hostage by greedy retailers who think we should be grateful they take the time to deal with us. Re: The end of glow?
Shelf space is expensive and shop owners want to stock them with things that sell. It is a fact that glow motors do not sell they way they used to 20 years ago. Can't really blame the shop owner for wanting to make a living....

Re: The end of glow?
You don't have to stock it but you can make it available upon request. I read the ops post again and the way it is written is that he doesn't sell glow any more except for a few engines of his choice. If I walked into a store and asked about an OS 1.20 and he immediately did not offer to order one for me post haste it would be the last visit as to me its no longer a hobby shop.

Re: The end of glow?
Glow isn't going anywhere, horse power to weight ratio can't beat them. I find the small gas engines, 10 cc to 15 cc are harder to tu e and keep tuned..... the added weight of the cdi box and battery isn't worth the savings of the initial install, plus there going in smaller planes, added weight a bit more critical, plus the installation area in the fuse....... my thoughts and experience. I won't go nothing smaller than a 20cc maybe even 30cc. Just my opinion......

Re: The end of glow?
My take on it all is that 20 years ago Glow was probably the best alternative but in the last 5-10 years Gas and Electric have made big strides in viable alternative power options. So now we have 3 options.. Glow, Gas and Electric power.
For me Glow is still my power source and I dabble a bit in Electrics. I have no interest in Gas for the size of planes I fly and where I fly. Has Glow taken a hit from this.... You bet it has. But it is merely a choice and personal preference to what you want to use now a days. Not sure what Hobby Shop the OP uses but maybe in his area the flyers are mainly Gas or Electric so he stocks what sells. But he may be missing out on crucial Glow sales by not offering them as an option. Personally I think Glow will still be around for a long time yet but has to share the sales with Electrics and Gassers and that is fine with me.
