HK 500 - Slow start not so slow

I have an HK 500, and noticed that the slow start is not as slow as my Trex 500. Even if I try to bring the throttle up slowly, it seems to only engage at around 20%. Could be :

ESC - (Turnigy Plush 80A) which I have programmed for slow start. I have used other Turnigy Plush (40A) without that problem.

Receiver - (Orange DSM2 5 ch) connected to my DX7

Motor - (Turnigy Typhoon 500H) could be too powerful. I have reduced the max throttle to 80% (tail bolt shattered twice).

Head speed high - with 12T pinion. Should probably be using 11T, but can't find one. Reduced speed on DX7 with Throttle curve

Any other suggestions? New ESC?

Gilles

Re: HK 450 - Slow start not so slow

Just curious to know why would you be using an 80A esc? seems like a bit of overkill.

Another thing I would question is why are you using an motor that is giving you a "too high head speed" as you mention?

an HK450 with a stock motor and 40A ESC (which is what I use on my HK450's) draws 12A on hover and 17A on the top end. A 3D motor pulls about 20-25A. There is no reason you should be using a 80A ESC.

You need to know what you want from your heli and then get the appropriate motor ESC combo that suits what you want. IT could be the combination of motor and ESC you are currently using is giving your the performance (or lack of it) that you are describing. I'm curious to hear what other opinions are on this.

A mistake of mine to say HK 450. I have a few of those, but I meant HK500. Sorry. It's a habit of mine. Just getting into the 500 series.

Motor requires 65A ESC. I went for the 80A ESC.

Some folks suggested getting an 11T pinion, but I only could find a 12T one. I reduced head speed with transmitter.

Re: HK 500 - Slow start not so slow

What kind of radio system do you have. I find two things help with soft start. One things are hard to get moving so that when you do apply enough power to make it turn it gets rolling real fast once things start to turn. Belt tension, gear lash, and lack of silicon lube on the tail drive belt all can make a difference. I have a Futaba radio system and I set my throttle stick at 9 degrees at bottom but this may not work for everyone. You can set it to a couple of degrees under where it starts to turn the motor. Next I set my #2 throttle curve point to 25 degrees what that does is give you a much more gradual slope which makes soft spool ups more possible. This stuff works for me but then again my flying style is sport so in my case the more mellow the better. The 3D guys will argue what I said because it won't work for them.

Re: HK 500 - Slow start not so slow

DX7 - I like the idea for slow throttle curve. Mine would start at 20%. It's a bit scary to set to say min 15% in case this thing decides to give power below that point. I would also use Idle 1 and Idle 2 modes. When I start, I usually move the throttle stick slowly until it engages and quickly move back, then apply a bit more. It's that initial jerk that is the problem. I'm on my third tail gear on this thing with very few flights only.

I just finished building my Trex 500 ESP, and boy what a different in slow start. Might take the plunge and get a different ESC.

Re: HK 500 - Slow start not so slow

I rebuilt the tail, adjusted the main blade tension, replaced the main shaft, lubbed everything and believe it is acceptable now. I have created a video so you can let me know if you think the slow start is acceptable. Note that the headspeed was probably too high initially. I have lower throttle curve. That's probably why I had to bolts sheer on me. I haven't taken the heli for a test flight yet.
