How to re-magnitize a magnet? PROBLEM SOLVED

Need help on this one....
I have a DLE 55. A little heat was used to help in the removal of the prop hub from the crank. Since then , the magnet has lost its magnetic force. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem. (The hub seems to out of stock). I could drill it out and replace, but, only if I have to. I did place other magnets on it over night to try and re-align the (atoms) , but not working.

Re: How to re-magnitize a magnet?

You will most likely have to replace the magnet. It’s most likely a rare earth type and yes it can be re-magnetized to its original strength. Will you be able to accomplish this at home? I don’t know but it may be easier to just replace it with a new one. This I have done before using heat to soften the adhesive holding it in the hub. It would be very difficult to drill out. You may be able to order the magnet from the engine manufacturer or some other manufacturer. If not there are suppliers of magnets on the internet. Good luck which ever way you go. It is important you use the same diameter magnet as this will affect the timing.

This might work.

Get a good strong magnet and stroke it in one direction over the magnet that needs to be re-magnetized. Use only one of the poles on the good magnet.

It is also possible to do it with an electromagnet using the same procedure.

Re: How to re-magnitize a magnet?

Thanks for the responses....I have tryed the magnet over magnet , but I may not of had a good enough host magnet. But, I have since contacted Thunderbolt rc and Jeff has a few in stock . I think my problems are solved. Good learning experience just the same, one of many.

Re: How to re-magnitize a magnet? PROBLEM SOLVED

The other issue is that the poles have to be oriented correctly to trigger the HES.

Trying to re magnetize the magnet will be a crap shoot - getting the N or S pole.

Also, make sure when you install the new magnet, the proper pole is facing up. Test the magnet on your ignition by passing the magnet over the HES and seeing if it will trigger spark. When you find the correct face, mark it with a marker (unless the manufacturer has already done this for you).

Thanks for the advice......even though I do have a new prop hub coming to me , I still may try as you suggest with a better magnet. ( with the damaged hub that is).
