Re: Building a Piper J3 Cub .40
Good idea. I'll stare at the plane for awhile with that thought in mind. I took the fuse outside into the bright light and the red on blue didn't look too bad, so we'll see. I finished the top of the wing and managed to fit it back on the plane again. The covering of the wing and its seat on the fuse, multiple in some cases, makes for a tight fit but it does fit and I managed to get the hold down bolts tightened up. I put the plane back up on the floats yesterday. I need to install the struts again and see what adjustments are necessary with respect to the CofG and the float steps. When all that's done I'll start building up the 3/16" landing gear wires with balsa. I keep all my scrap balsa so I have lots to work with.

Re: Building a Piper J3 Cub .40
Seems I forgot about Murphy's Law. I should have known when things were going so good. Sitting there staring at the front of the plane I noticed the wing dips to one side by about an inch. Seems a few layers of ultracote in the recess in the front of the wing and on the bulkhead above the windshield was thick enough to force the wing back so it won't sit down in the saddle at the back. The TE touches the center of the fuse causing the wing to rock side to side . Now I'm going to have to relieve some material from the back of the wing so it can drop down securly against the saddle.

Re: Building a Piper J3 Cub .40
Hopefully my problem is now behind me. I have the plane back on the floats and I'm positioning the CofG 3/8" ahead of the step on the floats. I had to spend time thinking about how to do it but I think I now have it. I marked the bottom of the wing and then used a square sitting on a mark between the steps. The upper part of the square points up at the mark under the wing.
Hmm, looking at the photo again and suddenly realized the top of the floats must be parallel with the work surface. Back to the drawing board . . .

Re: Building a Piper J3 Cub .40
Just a thought but what if you used a string with a weight on it positioed under the wing at the CG point. It might make moving things around easier and you won't need that 3rd. hand.

Re: Building a Piper J3 Cub .40
Looking very nice indeed. Can hardly wait to see it finished and flying!

Re: Building a Piper J3 Cub .40
It's been freezing some mornings lately!! By the time I get the floats properly mounted there will be ice on the lake. I can continue working on that project during the winter. So, I stuck on a set of wheels and am going to start loading in the electronics. This is where I begin to question whether or not I made a wise move converting this thing to electric . According to the plan I need 5" from the firewall to the prop hub. I had to drill a few more holes in the mount bracket to bolt on the motor and that went well, providing it's facing the right way . It looks a little awkward to me ?????

Re: Building a Piper J3 Cub .40
Managed to bolt the adjustable motor mount into place. Then fitted the motor and adjusted it to roughly where it needs to be. I'm obviously going to have to drill some holes in the firewall for cooling, after I give it some more thought . Then I stuck the cowl back on and fitted the propeller.
