Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
Hello again guys!
Today was spectacular and the flying not so bad either. Here are some pics of my Tiger Moth and Cub. Today, on my Moth, I tested both a 12x6 wood prop and a 13x7 apc E prop. I liked the 1/2 throttle power with the 13x7 apcE. I ran both for 20 minutes with of combination climbs, circuits and full stop and take offs. The 13x7 was more squirrely on take off with lots of yaw(or it could be the pilot). I will try the 12x8 apcE next for comparison. Battery drain in 20 min (3300 ma on the 12x8 wood) (2480 ma on the 13x7 apcE). I guess the apcE wins. This was for both flights on my 4S5000 lipo. I only have my HZ Supercub to compare to, but landing speed is still a bit hot...for me anyway. Flaps would be a nice addition...or more practice! I am using full rate on all controls still....since the flight characteristics change from slow to fast flight so drastically. No time to play with switches yet. Tried some loops today, nice and big with no surprises. Power off stalls are just lazy and mushy with no excitement. Power on stalls did break and drop a wing with easy recovery. I will try something more heroic next time, but first I need to nail some nice slow spot landings. My runway is a grass road on the side of a hayfield against a fenced tree-line. Not much room for error, either land or go around again. Take off roll (nice and scale) about 30 feet. I won`t talk about the landings yet... Unionville sure makes nice aircraft! I just love this Electric Conversion, especially the half throttle fly-bys. Oh, and the plane is so clean I can keep it in the house! No smell or mess. Go E Power!! FYI- The conversion cost me about $220.00 using Turnigy electronics and a zippy battery....props included. Steve |

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
steevo the squrely on take off, is them big fat tires(you need the stinky ones LOL) ,get some tall thin ones .trust me on this one .you will always have to stuff in a bunch of right rudder just after leaving the ground .but it is mutch better with low drag tires as they force you to make the proper corrections on the ground ,that way the rudder is in the right place when it leaves the ground.good to see your having fun Roger

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
Thanks Roger,
I will see what I can find. Its not on the ground that its squirley, its when it first get airborne. My ground is real rough too (farmers field). landing is a little scary as it bounces all over the place when it hits the ruts. I was going to try some bigger low-bounce tires. I will look for something tall and skinny for sure, like you suggest. I tossed the old stinky ones out! Its a real blast!...lovin every minute of it! Cheers, Steve |

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
Very nice Moth Steve. I agree that Unionville makes a nice kit, but you'd better be a builder. Here is the moth I finished last year and flew on an OS .40 FS. Very scale-like flier especially with the four-stroke sound. I see you are flying on the Island. Unfortunately our field is still covered in snow.

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
Nice Job Ace!
I will build one day, but no time yet. Thankfully I bought this plane second hand from RAMJET, so he did the painful part and now I reap the benefits... LOL It did come with a 4 stroke, but I have fuel allergies so Electric is my game now. Plus I can fly without disturbing the neighbors! Also, I run an Eco- business and must practice what I preach too. No snow here anymore so flying season is on. (dodging wind and rain that is). Cheers, Steve |

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
Hey Steevo,
Glad you had a good weekend with the tiger. Dont worry too much about the rudder input on takeoff, it tends to be the nature of the beast, I flew a full scale chipmunk when i lived in ottawa, and i'd have full left rudder in at t/o and let it out as i accelerated! you could try a coarser pitched prop and will aid it marginally, but as long as you're tracking fine i wouldnt worry about it too much. when are you gonna be out here in 'gods country'? the fabric and filling coats are done on the 1/4 scale pup, color will go on tomorrow am, should be flying in a couple of weeks! you could always get into large scale gas, just use ethanol blends!...you should still be able to sleep at nite! how is the electronics cooling with your's? did you put any extra holes in the cowling or fuse? cheers Rob

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
oh yeah Steve.
Congrats on going from the super cub to the tiger moth...that's a pretty challenging jump! Rob

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
Hi Rob,
Thanks for the advice, I have been flying 3 channel too long and forgot how to use my thumbs (truth be told)...but I do enjoy by HZ SuperCub. The Moth really flies well, nice and cool too, just slight warmth on the motor and really none on the battery after 20 minutes of shooting circuits. here are some pics from Sunday. I`m all electric man...no more gas for me. I enjoy a tranquil field down the street, bother no-one, just me and the birds., I can`t even scare the deer from the alfalfa (LOL). If I get out of the office and come up to see my customers in Nelson and Kaslo this Summer I will look you up! Cheers, Steve |

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
Yeah...I have gone through a Parkzone Cub,Stryker, Spitfire and FW190. It was time to graduate up to 4 channel. I am also converting a Spirit 100 Glider to electric as we speak(literally on my desk in front of me).
Once I got my hands on a Dx6i..I just couldn`t help myself! I use to fly a Cadet with OS40 on floats 15 years ago, and have had a real life 57 Tri-Pacer on Floats too (my younger years before wife and kids..) Its in my blood too! It is nice to move back to something that flies like a real airplane should, as far as controls go anyway....and it looks so darn good! When is your Moth gonna be ready Rob? Steve |

Re: Unionville Tiger Moth
Hi Steve,
I've probably got about 3-4 hours left on the moth, mostly just set up and programming (I use the DX6I too), so will probably do that when I'm doing the setup and programming for the pup. I'm into the short strokes with the pup, so would like to have both of them in the air by easter weekend, if mother nature cooperates! more snow overnight! I close my restaurant for a couple of weeks starting this saturday, so finishing these projects is entirely feasible, as i probably wont be travelling anywhere. cheers Rob
