I started smoking today...

I tried my Sullivan Skywriter smoke pump today for the first time. I've got it dialed down pretty low, but I still think it is way too much oil.

When I turn it on, I get ok smoke. When I turn it off, I get smoke that tapers off to nothing but it takes 5-10 seconds. A few folks speculated that too much oil might be quenching the muffler and soaking it which then slowly burns off.

So, I'm inclined to think that my next step should be much less smoke and go from there.

Any thoughts from experienced smokers?

What type of motor, muffler, and oil are you using?

Scratch that...

I went to the field again today. I took a peek inside the cowling and found that the neoprene smoke oil line was split just before the fitting on the muffler.

As such, I have no useful data on smoke oil flow rate. I'll fix it and see where I am.

Thanks.

I did not like using the tygon tubing for gas or smoke fluid because it was to stiff and became hard with use, and the neoprene does split easy especially if it is not sized exactly. Industry wise the use of buna nitrile tubing is supposed to be better. Longer lasting and remains flexible. The only place for the quantities we would us was Sullivan and can be found on their site http://www.sullivanproducts.com/Fuel...sMainFrame.htm
I will be using it for my gas fuel line tubing and smoke tubing.

I have used tygon (the yello clear stuff) for gas planes for years without any hardening issues. However I did find it unsuitable for use for smoke fluid due to the fact the tygon wont take the heat and will melt eventually and leak all around the inlet nipple.

My fix, easy one at that: solder a small length (maybe 2 inches) of brass tubing to the smoke inlet nipple and attach the tygon (or neoprene) to that. The mufler heat dissipates enough and the end where the tygon is attached will stay relatively cool.

Worked great! Try it..

Duh! That makes perfect sense. I'm going to do that because the tygon seems to be a much more robust tubing.

THanks, AJC.
