Expensive!

Man,
I was going to rebuild my old trustworthy OS.32F (install new bearings) but I snapped the piston ring while inspecting it. Went on GH website to check the price for a new one.....in the immortal words of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo....zoinks!

Piston Ring - 32FH/SXH 32.49

I realize the machining process is probably expensive, but man it urks me to pay so much for a part that weighs a few grams!

Piston ring

Part no 22903400 I checked the hoby shop in the states and they list it as $20.99 in US funds. So they are not out of line on the price I guess when you consider the exchange.

Thats about normal, piston rings for the YS 4-strokes will run ya about $20 USD, regardless of the size of the motor

Companies make their money on the parts not the motor Unfortunately.

Frank Bowman Rings

Jason,
Try Frank Bowman, The Ringmaster.
I just bought a ring for a discontinued OS .28 heli engine from him. He makes rings for almost all engines and his prices are reasonable.
I paid less than $20 cdn by the time exchange and shipping was added.

On his price sheet I received with my ring he quotes his prices as, $8.50(usd) for up to 1" regular type rings, $9.50 (usd)for regular 1" to 2" rings.
For Dykes rings his prices are $9.50 (usd)for up to 1" and $10.50(usd) for 1" to 2"

He lists the OS 32 as being an engine he stocks rings for.
He also makes rings for YS engines too.

He also will make special rings to order.

His address is:

Yeah, a lot of the collectors get rings from him that ar not available any more.

I can make rings, but its not an easy prosess (deceiving - it looks simple and its "is" but they have to be made just perfect and then heat treated) unless you are set up for it. Also, the fine grained cast iron is a bear to get in smaller bar sizes, let me tell you!

ANyway, you think that engine is expensive, last year for fun I priced what it would cost to buy all the parts for an OS 32 SX heli engine, that sells for $189 Canadian (at that time). It would cost over $500 to make the engine up from buying the parts!! I guess like many other industries, they nail you on replacement parts.... ouch!

For example, I was trying to repair two 4 stroke engines in the past year. One needed a crank and one a head. Both engines sell for $300 CAnadian, and the head was $100 and the crank $90!! I dont think it was worth 1/3 of the engine but hey, thats where thye make their money I guess....
