48" ws full fuse depron Spitfire

Just posting some pictures of the latest build. Everyone needs to have a WWII fighter ready to fly.

UAW is around 950gm. Motor swings a 10x5 prop and produces around 1100gm of thrust using a 2100ma 3s 20c battery. The whole plane is covered in 3/4oz glass and WBPU.

The plane launches easily with a light underhand toss. It handles 15km winds without issue and glides quite nicely with the motor off.

Another great build Gery! Did you build this from your own plans?

No, I downloaded and rescaled the plans. Credit for the design goes to a gentlman by the name of Dave Philpotts. The plane is originally designed as 1/9 scale and his drawings are 100% complete for building in balsa. It's a real work of art to look at. It also includes the details for retracts.

It took almost 1-1/2 hours to plot the drawings.

Very nice looking plane Gery and a great size as well.Is the wing all depron as well with ribs made out of depron or is it a balsa rib/depron covered wing.Any carbon in there for stifness, any chance on seeing the inside of the fuse?John

Re: 48" ws full fuse depron Spitfire

The wings are made from 3mm depron with 6mm depron ribs. They start off in 3 pieces. A center section and two ends to allow for dahedral. I started with a flat piece of 3mm depron in the shape of the wing. Bottom ribs were glued in place along with a piece of carbon rod. The rod overhangs enough to pass thru the center section. The 3 sections are glued together and then I sheeted the top with 3mm depron. This may be a bit overkill but, it was my first attempt at building with ribs etc. and it made life easy for me.

The fuse was built similarly. I cut the profile out of 6mm depron and glued the formers to it. I then covered it with 3mm depron in individual sections. In areas that were too difficult for me to form depron, I glued in a piece of blue foam and carved it to fit.

I did take some pictures of the build. Unfortunately, I erased them befor tranferring them from the camera.

Re: 48" ws full fuse depron Spitfire

Ordered a case of full size sheets from rcfoam. Split the cost with my cousin. Shipping is expensive but still a substantial savings. Don't know if that's the case with today's exchange rate. At least they don't charge the same cost for 3mm & 6mm as the shops up here.

Gery,

Just beautiful plane! Won't you be too busy barbequing in two weeks to fly it ?? Ha
Noticed the MinWax polycrylic.....do you seal the Depron before painting? or after?

Re: 48" ws full fuse depron Spitfire

I sealed the whole plane first and then covered it with 3/4oz glass. I just gave it a couple of more coats & rough sanded. Time to paint.
